Ferrari 250 GTO CHASSIS 4293 LE MANS 1963 SECOND PLACE.

SUPERIOR MODELS 250 GTO
CHASSIS 4293 LE MANS 1963 SECOND PLACE.

I bought this kit about 15 years ago and started it about ten years ago. I put it aside when time and worsening eye sight made continuing not pleasurable. Having this year had cataracts removed and new lenses I determined to return to this project.

On opening the box the kit was a daunting project, it was not helped by the fact that the instructions are only adequate. It needs considerable care to firstly identify all the parts. I have seperated all the parts into self seal plastic bags each bag labeled to relate as far as possible to each numbered step of the instructions. The parts are minute so I always try to handle them over a box lid so that when I inevitably drop one I have a chance of finding it and do not have to spend too many hours on my hands and knees on the floor.

Despite the tiny size of many of the parts the quality is of such a high standard that building is not too difficult. In assembly of the chassis I built a jig to ensure that the wheelbase was correct and that all was square.

I have been posting an almost daily digest on
http://www.forum-auto.com/automobile.../sujet7793.htm

At present I am desperately in need of photos of the car to see what modifications I need to make to the body on the kit. Top of bonnet and right side rear in particular. Interior colours are also an area of concern. Current information suggests the rear bulkhead and inside doors a light metalic gold with grey for roof.

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO CHASSIS 4293 LE MANS 1963 SECOND PLACE.

Thebasic Chassis and Front suspension and fuel tank was completed many years ago. At the time I stopped I had trial fitted the rear suspension and found that ensuring that the assembly was square and both sides the correct wheel base I would need a jig. Building the jig was the first stage followed by several trial builds and fit to the body the jig was adjusted till the fit was correct.

The body is silver formed I belive by electro plating a silicone mould. It is paper thin and weighs about 10 gramms. Remember this kit is 1/43rd scale

Not worked out yet how to post big pictures. The car will be red as the Le Mans car. The kit has three vents in the sides of the front wings. The cars were produced with two but often after damage they sprouted an extra to aid cooling.

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO CHASSIS 4293 LE MANS 1963 SECOND PLACE.

Ferrari 250GTO interior colours
Jess Pourret in his Ferrari 250 GT competition cars states that the interiors were completely devoid of upholstry except cloth covers to the seats. There was no headlining and only later was there a an aluminium cover over the dash which was painted matt black. This was painted matt crackle black The rest of the interior panals were painted mettalic gold. However this was as they left Scaglietti. Period photos I have suggest several cars had black floors and transmission tunnels. A picture of the SEFAC entered No20 at Lemans 1963 clearly shows the Gold rear bulkhead. On my model I have decided for want of limited pictures to go with Black Floor but the rest Gold. They definitely did not have upholstry. That only came later when they started to be restored.

Beautiful work, these models by Superior Models are expensive but fantastic, they need a lot of care and patience to build and finish but when done are truly a masterpiece in miniature, yours allready looks great and looking forward to the next up-date of this great project!!

Hi and thanks for the help with the gold GTO interior question. Very interesting kit you've got hold of here, will be watching closely; especially what you do with the cockpit!

Cheers, Lee
