Re: EST Wire and best time setting!

EST wire should be on the passenger side fender well or on the firewall on that side. It's a single wire. Brown with a Black stripe.

Re: EST Wire and best time setting!

No need to cut it. There is a weather-pack connector on it.

Should be located on the engine wire harness, next to the left valve cover (watching engine front) next to the air injection control valve.

It's the type of connector that GM uses on its wiring harnesses.

Re: EST Wire and best time setting!

I believe he means the A.I.R. diverter valve. This is the valve which controls the flow of air from the air injection pump to the exhaust manifolds.

A WeathPack connector is a type of electrical connector designed by the Packard Electric Division (you'll often read "PED" on the body of these connectors) of General Motors. They are now sold under the Delphi name and many other auto manufacturers now use them because they are a superior design. The connector you need to find is a single wire connector looking something like this:

Re: EST Wire and best time setting!

EST - The same connector as in the picture above, but for a 305 check beside the throttle body over the intake manifold on the passenger side. That's where it was on my '91 Caprice, although the casing was a different colour.

As for the timing, I would like to say 4deg. BTDC? However, what I like to do is set up a vacuum gauge and set the timing with that.

Re: EST Wire and best time setting!

I think 0* is what you'll find on the emissions sticker. I personally have played with 0-6*BTDC in my 89. 4* probably gives a slight SOTP boost. But I had pinging issues at times with 4* and had to go back to 0*.
