Paints I don't think anybody uses but are EXCELLENT

Now, I've heard Tamiya paints on this board a lot, and Testors, and the occasional mention of Gunze Sangyo or Humbrol, but there's a company that puts out inexpensive lacquers for model cars that you all should take a look at next time you're at your hobby shop.

Floquil.

They make and mix their colors for model train enthusiasts (hence Sante Fe Warbonnet Red and Conrail Blue) but the colors work astonishingly well for model cars. Their flats are REALLY flat and their primer will protect about any modelling material (resin, styrene, metal, putty) from about any sort of paint. Plus it's a low pigment, high paint adhesion grey that doesn't alter the color coat much.

I've been using Floquil for about five years now and am shocked that there aren't more people using it. Guess I had to spend a few years superdetailing Athearn F-units in Erie-Lackawanna and Lehigh Valley paint to find them out.

If I find some, I'll give them a try. Are they spray cans or bottled form?

I've seen them at my hobby shop and they are rather expensive. I do know they make woodstaining paints too, but since I don't know exactly what their paint descriptions mean I'ven ever tried them

do you know if they make a good semi gloss black?

i've used the primer and the silver. the primer is good but i've had bad results with the silver. they're not that cheap in my area and the thinner stinks to high heaven!

however, i do agree with you on the primer. its the best one i've tried so far and i love the fact that i can airbrush it.

a.

While we're on the subject, how are their Crystal Cote and Gloss Coat clearcoat paints? Good, polishable? Goes on pretty thick or thin?

Okay, here's the answers one at a time.

The Syndicate: I've only ever seen them in bottle form.

Daggerlee: Never tried the semi gloss black, but I've seen it on gondolas and it's about equivalent to Testors square bottle flat black. Their flat black is REALLY flat. As for their gloss, it's good FOR A TIME. It tends to yellow quickly in the bottle if you don't thin it out soon enough for airbrushing, and it is very thick.

CYPH3R: Here you go.

ive known of them for some time but from what i understand Floquil is no longer lacquer based, theyre enamel based now. most lacquer based paint has been banned in the US since theyre so toxic.
