95 GMC Jimmy-No charge

I was driving my jimmy in the rain and smelled wires burning, a few minutes later it died and would not start. I changed the cap and rotor and it starts now but the charging system is not working. The alt. and battery are good and i can't see any damaged wires in the engine compartment. I would like to know the best places to start looking for the problem at. I'm not very good at automotive electrical problems. Please someone give me some help,Thanks

I had the alt. tested again today and it tests good on the bench tester, but on the truck when it is running the volt meter only shows the battery power. The dash guage is showing low volts but i have no battery light showing. I even pulled the drive belt off and started it and still have no warning light. The wire coming from the bat. to the alt. is good but i don't know about the other two. Could the battery block be the problem? I need to get it fixed asap. HELP
