what's your top speed?

Hey guys, I was just wondering why preludes have stupid gear ratios. 5th gear at 130 is redlining. I know because I topped it out the other day. I would have gone faster but my friend told me to slow down because he saw that i was real close to redlining it. I forgot to pay attention to the tach. MY old 92 sentra ser coulda gone at least 140 in fifth gear if it had more power and the governor taken off. Also, I noticed this car which is a 95 si, has power that kicks in around 3900 rpms and flattens around 6200rpms. Although it still is torquey as hell. I just wish is whas geared better so that when i mod it, it can have faster top speed. Oh well, I shoudn't be going that fast anyways. What's your top speed?

Re: what's your top speed?

Prelude si top speed is 127mph@6500rpm. 156lbs of torque isn't really all that much, so it wouldn't feel as quick as it does with longer gears. The close ratio gearbox is better for acceleration than it is for top speed.

Anyway my top speed as with all stock 4th gen vtecs is 135mph@7500rpm. I haven't taken it all the way up there yet but I've been pretty close.

keep in mind most peoples speedometers are off by a little bit, especially those who have aftermarket wheels. my speedometer is off by 6mph on my 94 si at low speeds, i dont know about high speeds.

Re: Re: Re: what's your top speed?

how is the gearing on the vtec motor. I was thinking about doing an engine swap, but I wanted to know what the top speed would be on the vtec. When does the vtec redline?

Re: what's your top speed?

Like I said stock top speed is 135@7500 rpm. That's at redline (actually somewhere between 7400-7500rpm). The rev limiter kicks in around 7900 but it's really not good to bounce off the limiter.

Re: Re: what's your top speed?

So, for top speed I would probably be beter off with the h23 transmission because I know that I was around 6400rpm at near 130mph. That leads me to believe that the h23 has wider gear ratios than the h22. At least I can assume fifth is wider on the h23.

yes ive heard the h23 tranny has wider ratios than the h22 because its a slightly bigger engine.

Re: what's your top speed?

And the H22 has smaller ratios for better acceleration. What exactly do you need to go 135+mph for anyways?

Re: Re: what's your top speed?

I don't really need to go over 130. However, I just think that having the raitos so closes kind of takes away from the acceleration because of shifting all the time. Plus , it would be cool to go at least 140mph, every now and then. on my ser, first gear went up to 35. In the prelude, first won't go past 25.

Re: what's your top speed?

Close ratios don't make a car slower becuase you have to shift more often. Its completely the opposite. Shorter ratios keep the engine pulling in the meat of the powerband allowing the high end power to be optomized. Honda's are a bit lacking on low end power so thats why their arent many performance orriented Hondas with super long gearing. If you want to go more than 140 do it in your SE-R so you don't wreck the lude. Gotta keep as many straight ones on the road as possible.

EDIT: Ok, on your profile it says you have a Saturn. Do you even have a sentra?

Re: Re: what's your top speed?

REALLY? I need to update my profile then. I went from a saturn to a tempo to a sentra se-r to a prelude si. Right now the only car I have is the prelude si.

Re: what's your top speed?

150 mph at 7500 r's. But don't do that, it's no a good idea, listen to hondaracing, stay within the powerband.

i just had to put a brand new 400$ a/c compressor in my prelude and the mechanic very firmly told me NEVER to go over 4500 RPMs with the a/c on and that thats how alot of compressors break. (maybe thats just for the shitty aftermarket one hes putting in, but i still wouldnt recommend racing with the a/c on, plus it robs power)
