99 intrigue

i have a 99 intrigue that was not starting, just clicking.
had a mech look at it and they replaced the battery. starts fine but my
temp and fuel gauges are stuck at the pins. can this be fixed easily?
also i had the park/turn lights melting as well.
i bought two new sockets and have not had the issue since and that was three years ago.

Re: 99 intrigue

Do the pins move at all when you start the car and then fall to the bottom or do they just sit there motionless? You could need a new guage cluster or the needles just became detached from the little peg thing it moves on. That happened to a different car I had a while back Just opened up the cluster and pushed them back on and they worked. As far as the socket issue that has happened to me too and I would imagine many others. I would constantly be changing lightbulbs before the socket replacements and since then it has stopped. Must be an Intrigue thing.

Re: 99 intrigue

ty, yes both needles were pushed all the way to the pins. I removed the cluster and the cover and pushed them back to the bottom and that worked ty again.

Now the next thing is to find out why my rpm's will randomly jump to 2k at times when slowing dow or just starting the car.

turning it off and on will often set it back to 1k or off and turn the wheel several times and restating will set rpms back.

other then little quirks the car is very nice about 260thousand kilometers on it.

Re: 99 intrigue

I dont understand what your saying about the Rpms. If you meant the RPMS go up and down while driving they are suppoosed to do that but they are supposed to idle at about 1k Rpms when the car is in park. Is your Engine Light On? I would say check your throttle position sensor but that will usually throw an engine code if I remember correctly. When the RPMS spike up to 2k does the engine sound like it is racing or accelerating? Or is it still running smoothly when the RPMS jump up to 2k? My guess is it has something to do with the cluster or maybe even an electrical issue. Also this could be less likely but still relevant. Have you had any problems with the transmission?

Re: 99 intrigue

I do notice with both of my Intrigues too at around 40 mph when the car is decellerating and im slowing down my Rpms do spike up to about 2k rpms then return to normal. I think they are supposed to do that. Now when you start the car cold the Rpms are going to be higher than when you start the car hot. Usually the first start of the day my Rpms are at just under 1.5k rpms on my 02 Intrigue and on my 99 Intrigue the first start is at just under 2k rpms but when the engine gets hot they both return to 1k rpms.

Re: 99 intrigue

sorry about the confusion on rpms.
warm or cold at times i can start the car and get around 1 - 1.5 k rpms but other times the engine and rpms will fly to 2k +
this same ting will happen when driveing and slowing down to a stop say at a light.
all goes fine then suddenly the rpms and engine jump to 2k.
other times it will just go to a normal 1k.
if i put car after stopped into netrual or park and restart afew times it will sometimes drop back to a normal 1k idle

My Intrigue did the same thing until I replaced the TPS, that solved the revving issues all together.. I was told that it wouldn't, tried it anyway, worked great.

Re: 99 intrigue

like nd4sp said I would try replacing the Throttle Position Sensor first it is fairly easy to do. 2 screws an electrical plug and if I remember correctly I had to take out the air intake stuff and filter cover.

Re: 99 intrigue

thank you for the advice. changed the tps today. easy change just the two srews but i just removed the bracket around the egr. the two nuts only hold the bracket the egr stayed bolted in.
i wil see over the next few days if it solves the issue.

Re: 99 intrigue

Just an FYI thing.I don't know if it's related or not,But when I drive mt 98 with the cruise control on and have to come to a stop and hit the brakes mine also shoots up to 2k and then normalizes.

It won't do that if I have enough time to hit the cancel button though.

Like I said.Don't know if this plays a role but maybe something to consider.Just wanna help others like they help me...
