noisy, noisy a/c

Lemme separate this from an old thread and see if anyone can give me feedback:

I thought my AC was doing fine, but then it started getting warmer and warmer...to barely cool. Obviously I've lost enough refrigerant to keep it from blowing cold. I thought I put dye in when I recharged it in December, but maybe I didn't because I can't see any leaking spots. I'll try it again, but I have two other questions:

1- the compressor seems noisy to me. Not rattling or squeeling, but just very noticeable when it kicks in (bbbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....). Not sure I can check oil level without removing it, but I could also add an oil charge...but don't want to overfill. Do all these compressors sound like this?

2- I have full fan control in both front and rear, but when the fan is on high it is very noisy...and doesn't seem to put out much volume of air. All of my other vehicles push more air through the vents than this truck. With controls at full dash vents I can't even feel the center vent hitting me in the driver seat. It sounds like I should be getting blasted, but it's like a kid blowing kisses. Is there a filter or something that may be blocking the air?

Are all these truck a/c systems so NOISY?

with a low charge you will get the compressor to make more noise as the refrigerent circulates the oil...less refrigerent less lubricating.

I would add a few ounces of the proper oil with a charge of refrigerent ...if it goes away that was the noise...

if you have too much oil in a system like this , the most that occurs is a lower effeciency....oil helps slow loss of refrigerent...

too much refrigerent you can damage the system , as well as the wrong oil ...

Suburbans were built for about 40 years-- so what year is yours? Can help with knowing the type of compressor etc.....

'96. It has about 106K on it, and the compressor looks original.

Re: noisy, noisy a/c

I thought I'd add a can of freon to see if itm got the compressor running long enough to get some cold air. Instead of sucking the contents in the compressor just kept doing its short cycle and the can didn't lose any gas. I hooked up a vacuum pump and it's running now, but I'm wondering how (if) the system was so full of air that it couldn't take any more gas...or maybe my compressor isn't actually pushing the gas through?

What is the normal vacuum pressure that I should see and hold?

Re: noisy, noisy a/c

WOOHOO! I drew 30 lbs of vacuum, it held for an hour; drew it again, disconnected the pump and left the guage on, and it held to approx 25 overnight. I'm drawing it again right now. If it holds 30 again I guess that means I don't have a leak.

Thumbs up Re: noisy, noisy a/c

Charged the system yesterday, ran it, shut down and looked for leaks, ran it again, let it sit overnight, checked it again....works fine. Still think the front fan/blower and vent doors might be amiss. But at least the air is cold.

if your system had air/moisture in it the oil absorbs this...then it can take a few hours at a full vacuum / pump on to BOIL OFF this !

also at a full perfect vacuum this would be 1 atmosphere , 15psi...with a nitrogen bottle , regulator set to 150psi I like to pressurize the system then look for leaks...
