Cool Aoshima Mercedes Benz AMG SL63

This is the model that's in the Aug. 2010 issue of Scale Auto magazine. I just took my own beauty shots; when I built it I let Jim Haught take the final shots of the model at the Birmingham NNL with his much-better camera than mine. I was hammering to get this thing finished by the Birmingham NNL.

As mentioned, this is the Aoshima kit, paint is Tamiya Champagne Gold. Great kit! It details out pretty nice, I built it to competitive Out-Of-Box standards (I hope ) The kit is very Tamiya-like in most respects, though the wheels are a bit wobbly, tires are a loose fit, bumper fit to body could be a bit better. Roof fit is excellent. Enjoyable kit to build, for sure. I show most of the paint/detail tricks in the article. As good as it is OOB, with some of the available aftermarket p/e stuff (especially the grilles and headrest fans) this thing would be amazing.

I would build this kit again in a heartbeat, but I'm hoping that would be if/when Aoshima does the SL65 Black Series. And of course I can't wait to build Revell's upcoming SLS...

Bob, I've been waiting for more pics of your SL. Thanks for sharing. You did a nice job, especially with the fit of the bumpers and rear lights! Nice color combo too!

Beautiful job as usual. I just saw this kit at a new Hobby Lobby near me. It comes in a pretty good size box. Bob what is your secret to a blemish free silver paint job? I hate painting silver. I usually use TS-17 but even light coats of TS-13 tend t refloat the silver pigment and cause some irregularities. I was going give the Testor's Wet Look a try this time.

Thanks!

Decanting & airbrushing helps a lot. Before going to all-clear, I mix the remaining color with clear for some "mid coats" as a barrier. I use my Iwata HP-CS Eclipse to put on the mist coats (color and clear), as it sprays a lot finer than my Badger Crescendo (even with the fine or medium tips). Mist coats with Iwata, wet coats with Badger, and sometimes a couple quick shots directly from the spray can. I don't have to do much wetsanding anymore, I do most of it on the primer coat and in the middle of color coats.

Thanks Bob I will try that. I did thacolor/clear mix) on a Gunmetal finish once and other metallics but I haven't tried it on a silver one yet.

I did too. Just get the 40% (or wait for the 50%)off cupon online then get it.

Thanks!

Engine looks terrible outside of the car; the block and transmission are not at all prototypical. But all of that stuff is hidden from view once installed, and everything that is visible is done quite well.

Chassis is very nice.
