89 Dakota low oil pressure
The oil pressure gauge just started going to zero when stopped. Revving the engine over 1200 rpm brings the pressure back to normal. Any ideas?

Re: 89 Dakota low oil pressure
Lets assume the engine has had regular oil changes and the engine oil level is good and the oil is the correct viscosity, such as 10W-30, and not 0W-20.
If this started to happen suddenly, something has gone wrong. Either the gauge or sender unit has a problem or there is an internal failure. IMO install a real mechanical oil pressure gauge on the engine to verify the oil pressure. If the pressure is okay (approx. minimum 15 psi at idle, 30 psi at 3000 rpm) then the sender or gauge is bad. If it really is very low, start with removing the oil pan and inspecting the oil pick-up screen and tube for blockage. If that is okay, replace the oil pump and change the oil filter. Then reassemble and see if the pressure has improved. |

Re: 89 Dakota low oil pressure
Magic Rat,
Thanks for the reply. I have confirmed your diagnosis with my brother, who used to drag race for Plymouth back in the 60's. Even though I only have 1000 miles on the oil, I am going to change the filter because I think it connects to the pump and make sure something is not blocking it. If that does not work, I will drop the oil pan and start looking at that. The oil pan has never been off in over 20 years so there might be a lot of stuff in there. Southpaw |

Re: 89 Dakota low oil pressure
Pull the distributor and check the drive gear. Some of the rebuilt distributors had fibre gears and they go bad. This drives the oil pump.

Re: 89 Dakota low oil pressure
TIe guage or the distributor gear are okay. Time to pull the oil pan. I have never pulled the oil pan off of this truck. Is there anything in particular I need to be aware of? When checking with a new guage, the oil pressure started going down sooner and I needed to run the engine at a higher rpm to get it back. Do you think this is a symptom of the pump just wearing out even more or is this more likely a more severe internal problem.?

Re: 89 Dakota low oil pressure
Unless the strainer is partially plugged I would pull the main bearing caps and check for worn main bearings. With the pan off I would do this and also check the rod bearings.

Fill in information and get quote. Check on pan gasket also as it will be needed. |

Re: 89 Dakota low oil pressure
Typically $30 for a stock pump but considdering your truck is an 89 and probably has higher miles i would go with around $60 and get the hight flow/high pressure pump just to feel better
