EGR Valve location

I got a SERVICE ENGINE SOON light the other day and took it to Autozone to have the code read. The guy there said it came up as a bad EGR valve code. He recommended trying to clean it before I replaced it. One problem though...I can't find it! I have a 1999 Suburban with the 5.7L V8. I've tried looking all around the throttle body but can't find anything that looks like the picture of the part on Autozone and RockAuto websites. Can anybody help me out and let me know where it's located? Thanks.

Re: EGR Valve location

Because it's GM, can't say for sure. But on my 1994 Sub with 5.7 the EGR is located in front of the distributor, kind of hidden.

Being 1994, mine does not have OBD2 codes which started in 1996. But my check engine light also comes on occasionally, then goes off, and also reads to EGR. My mechanic said I should not pay any worry to it (207K miles).

I have cleaned EGR twice on my 1988 B2200 truck, so I agree with the advise you were given (expensive EGR on B2200, about $250, much less for the Sub though). I think for GM Subs there are two types as well, and not so easy to find the difference. I guess I couldn't tell exactly which type mine had, without taking it off. First check all the vacuum hoses for cracks or losseness; my '98 Frontier read EGR code a few years ago, and a little 3 inch vacuum hose to it, directly underneath it, had deteriorated in the middle; replacing that solved the problem, ALL the other hoses were fine.

Codes do not say bad EGR valve.

What was the code no?

Egr valve should be bolted with 2 bolts on front of lower intake manifold.

Round steel cylinder can 3 in around 4 in long with wires going into it.

Re: EGR Valve location

You guys rock...I found it! I was looking for something much smaller looking. I don't remember exactly what the codes were. I took the EGR off and cleaned it as best I could and put it back on and left the battery unplugged....I hope it resets. If not I'll go back to Autozone and get them to read the code again and I'll write it down. It had something to do with the pintle either being stuck open or closed.

Codes do not clear with battery disconnect.
See IF AZ WILL CLEAR CODES WITH SCANNER AND THEN WATCH FOR WHAT COMES BACK.
Let us know how it does.

Engine light may be off but the VCM will still have codes stored in it.
If problem is fixed light may stay off but if not it will come back.

The only to clear all codes is with a capable scanner.

So how hard or how long did it take to remove the EGR (I didn't do anything to mine, figured I'd need to remove it to even match up a new one) ? Sometimes stuff in the middle of the engine is difficult for me to reach, I'm 69 inches.
