89 electra park ave engine noise 3.8

Hi, My 89 park ave make a sound that sounds like a chain slapping against metal. I used a stethoscope and its coming from around the exhaust crossover by the tranny.. I was next to another buick electra and it was making the same noise.. Anyone have any idea whats going on?

Try listening against the trans side cover.

Drive chain, in the trans final drive, the timing chain is in the engine frt. cover, different area you would be listening to, no?

You really cannot do this on your own without the the proper tools a way to support the engine, remove the ft suspension subframe and so on, any yard has interchange books that will tell what interchanges. You cannot pull the trans out in the yard, I assume they have these components shelved.

Re: 89 electra park ave engine noise 3.8

Changing the chain is easy:

GETTING to the chain, on the other hand, is an all-day job and then some. I would not even attempt it on the vehicle, so plan on removing the transmission. That will include restraining the engine and dropping the front cradle, then removing the transmission.

FWIW, the last on I did I had the wrecking yard remove the core (for rebuild) while the car was in their yard. They do it all the time.

Yikes, you and your pics again, nicely done, we certainly agree on the what is required here, but we really don't know if in fact this is his issue. Not a job for most dyer's.

You went from a noise to no start? If spark and injector pulse, do a compression test.
