automatic tranmission problem

I have 1994 1.9 escort car one day was driving it to go hunting .parked it when i got in later wont move. acts like it want to move when uput in drive .but dont move any!!!i i checked fluid, changed the filter, all the fuses good,hadnt any trouble out of thetranission at all till that happen , ALL AT ONCE!! need opinon on maybe PUMP, TORQUE,OR VALUE BODY, OR SOLDNOIDS??? wont move forward or backward?all the levers in gear shift working . thaks for any help

This is a long shot but is it possible that somehow the brakes are applied? If the car is raised off the ground do the wheels spin freely?

no i had wrecker bring it home and put it in neuerl to drift back at end of driveway

Make sure the rod going into the transmission at its top front is actually rotating back & forth when someone moves the shift lever through the gears. Also check that the cable running from the throttle body down to the transmission is still connected and moving, and has some tension on the cable. It wont be much, but if that cable has snapped, it may not use enough oil pressure to cause the clutch packs to 'lock up'.
Then, with the engine running and the shift lever in "L" for first gear, check whether either one of the axles is turning. Its rare but possible for a CV joint to break apart inside - but you would be able to see one/both of the inner CV joints turning. You would have to be able to crawl underneath the front of the car to check this out.
If you went off road and shook up the car, you might check that the connector on the front of the tranny (halfway down the front side) is still snugly connected to the white goody on the transmission. Thats where the wiring to control the shifting solenoids is connected. I think you would have to remove the aif filter housing to reach the thing.
While its probably possible for the valve body to hang up suddenly, I have never heard where a replacement or rebuilt valve body was the soltuioni.
The transmission (F4EAT) in my 92 went from working 'normally' one moment, to not being able to move the car forward from a stop sign a few seconds later. I dont know if it had been slipping prior to that or shifting funny, since my sister-in-law was driving it and she doesnt pay any attention to such stuff. In that case the transmission would only turn the front wheels if they were raised off the ground; at least I was able to tell that it wasnt the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) on the back of the tranny that had gone bad, since the transmission would shift into higher gears). I think with a bad VSS the tranny wont work. Anyway I removed and rebuilt the transmission - found the clutch packs were pretty well worn down inside.
If thats the problem yours has, there is one thing you can try that is lots easier than transmission rebuilding. There is an update to the relief valve for the transmission oil pump, and you can install it with the tranny in the car, in about 20 minutes. Here is its name:
ATRATB039 02/01/1991 A/T - G4A-EL/4EAT Low Pump Pressure. I would think any transmission 'hard parts' outlet would have the kit for sale. Its about $30 I think. I google searched to find a 'hard parts' store, and ordered my tranny parts from them online.

I really doubt its the torque converter, but if you have to get the tranny rebuilt, get a rebuilt torque converter too.

Will the car move in reverse or any other gears?
Are you certain the shifter is not broken, and that the gears on the tranny are actually being changed?
You might have something wrong with the torque converter or something internal in the transmission.

i was talking to my son about ford escort not moving when u put it in gear.He said that day it happened he put in reverse and backed up and then he put it in forward gear .then it wouldnt move at all after that forward or backward .what could have broke stripped or come unlose ?? anyone please help about my automatic tranission ty

Check all the linkages going from the shifter to the transmission to make sure everything is hooked up. I don't know much about transmissions, but didn't see where anyone had mentioned this.

We already covered that on FEOA.net, it works in first gear only and won't upshift.

There are 4 potential reasons your tranny won't go. Transmission shift cable is broken, bad control valves, Oil pump dirty, broken, or damaged seals, torque converter damaged. Take it to a transmisson shop. They will, no doubt, tell you the 4EAT needs to be replaced. If you've got the money, do it. It would be good for another 100k.

It should last a lot longer than 100K. Having said that, it certainly wont if your kid does this again:

said that day it happened he put in reverse and backed up and then he put it in forward gear

Sounds to me like he put it into forward while it was still moving backwards!

Very good thought. Come to a complete stop before going from D into R or R into D. I just bought a tractor lawn mower. It says if you don't do the above you will incur some unreversible damage to the transmission. Always come to a stop before shifting.
