95 Camry - How to extricate broken bolts, or use duct tape?
This weekend I replaced my radiator. To access to undersize tubes and connections, I had to remove ~10 10mm nuts/bolts to remove this plastic panel that is about 4' by 1'. This had never been taken off before to my knowledge. Because they are so old and rusted, about 1/2 of them snapped off, leaving the threaded part still inside the hole. Is there any way to get these out???? I tried drilling but it got me nowhere.
The plastic part is back in and secure with 1/2 the bolts, but I'd like to secure it better. Am I better off just duct taping the other parts? |

What about plastic ties?

That could work as long as I drill another hole. That would definitely increase the support. I could then glue/tape over that to prevent road salt/dirt from creeing up from underneath through the holes.
I'm mostly interested in what more experience mechanics do when they snap off corroded screws.... I consider myself a novice. I also used WD40 to help loosen it to prevent snapping but didn't seem to help at all. |

Re: 95 Camry - How to extricate broken bolts, or use duct tape?
Although I am a big fan of WD-40 for lot's of things, it is not a good penetrating oil to help remove rusty nuts and bolts. Something like PB Blaster does a better job.
As far as what you could do now, you could get a bolt extractor kit at places like Sears or most hardware stores. They usually require you to drill a pilot hole before using the extractor. I would go to a Sears or your local hardware store and ask about bolt extractors and how they work. I would also try a better penetrating oil around the remaining threads and also check to make sure you are using a hardened drill bit and that it is still sharp. Good luck Mike Last edited by Mike Gerber; 05-24-2010 at 10:02 PM. |

Might be something here to help:
http://www.brandsplace.com/tool-hand...xtractors.html http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/may2003/techtotech.htm http://www.dimebank.com/tech/BrokenBolt.html Got a hunch you're dealing with fairly small screws. May just have to drill out the broken screw nutplate and all. Check with your dealer for replacement nutplates or just use wire ties as stated or use correct size self taping screws.
