Hi new to this but here goes. 97 grand cherokee auto trans. after 20 30 miles it will down shift on its own and after a few miles it will go back into higher gear. any ideas

Yes 2 ideas.
1. Check your throttle position sensor. 2. Post this in the Grand Cherokee forum. They would be more familiar with this.

I'll move this over to the Grand Cherokee forum for you.
The CPS (crankshaft position sensor) can also cause odd shifts.

from my recent experience i can almost put it on the throttle positioning sensor. put your multi meter to use and test the sensor.
