Unhappy Theft System??

I have a 98 sunfire 2.2l I was driving to a freinds last night doing about 80kph when the car just died. I had it towed home. The theft system light was flashing last night but is now on steady. The engine cranks over but seems to lack compression. Checked all the fuses and they are fine. Replaced the 2 ignition modules as they where both cracked. I've tried waiting 1/2 hour with the key on, but still no. I have hooked up a code reader and it gave me four codes. 1.)cylinder 2 misfire.(po302) 2.)crank postion sensor weak signal.(po341) 3.)evaporator/emmission control system malfuntion.(po440). 4.)torque converter clutch circuit stuck on.(po724) I don't know what else to check. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Theft System??

The theft system won't make the engine die, but could be the reason it's not restarting. When you waited 1/2 hour, was that all at once, or the 3x 10 minute cycles? Do a search if you need the exact procedure. Could also have a bad sensor in the lock cylinder.

If it sounds like there's no compression, then check the compression. The timing chain tensioners fail on these sometimes and causes no or very low compression. The p0302 will need to be checked out, but for now a single cylinder misfire should let it start and run. p0341 could be the cause of the stall and the no-start. I would begin diagnosing here. Look at the engine RPM on you scan tool while cranking, 0 RPM indicates that the CKP sensor has failed completely (I don't believe there's a code for CKP no signal). p0440 indicates a leak in the evaporative emissions system, won't make it die (or usually even run bad), but will give you worse gas mileage and worse emissions. You should take a look at that after you get it running. p0742 could make it die as you come to a stop, but not at 80 kph. Check the transmission fluid, if it's dark or smells burnt, have it flushed. Sometimes that will unstick the TCC solenoid.
