Starters!
I have a 2000 S10. 2.2L auto. I've had the truck for 3yrs. I have put 7 starters on it since I've had it. Starters last around 3 to 4 months and it will not engage. If the engine kicks back it brakes the gearing in the starter. What is wrong?

Re: Starters!
You need to check engine running/tune up end for what is causing kick back.
Also are you using a good rebuilt or new starter or the el chepo one? How many miles and has engine ever been tuned up? Is engine running good? Any check engine lights or codes?

Re: Starters!
I have replaced the spark plugs and wires back in Nov. There are no codes in the computer. No check engine light. The truck has 117,000 miles. I've gotten starters from 3 different rebuilders in this area. Same problem. I'm stumped and tired of byeing starters every 3 or 4 months. Please help!

Re: Starters!
You need to find out what is causing it to kick back.
Go over engine tune up,secandary ign. Are coils good? Good hot blue spark to all plugs?

Re: Starters!
I don't know if this will help. I had a similar problem but not with that many starters. My Starter would hang up and not do anything. You could turn the key all day and nothing would happen. I discovered that If I tapped on the bendix solenoid on the top of the starter, then turned the key it would start right away. On mine, the starter and specifically the bendix was located right under the passenger exhaust manifold which is just about the hottest place on the outside of the engine. I went to Autozone and bought a heat shield for the bendix which was really nothing more that a thick walled cylinder or Tube that mounted to the bendix. This kept the bendix cool enough to keep from binding up. Next time your starter won't start, take something like a tire iron and gently but firmly tap on the Bendix solenoid and then try the key again. If that works, you may have the same problem that I used to have.
