Angry 97 Golf 1.6 GL intermittent starting and stalling

Hope someone can help with this. I've had my golf for about a year and a half and in the last six months have had a recurring problem.

The problem is two fold:-

It will either not start at all, usually just after being driven on a short journey the car will not start again. However, by leaving it for a minute or two it will suddenly start.

Secondly, and more seriously, my car has cut out on me many times whilst driving it. It can happen at 20, 30 or 40 miles per hour.

I've taken it to a garage twice and both times the diagnostic check has not uncovered any faults. I have had a fuel switch replaced and more recently a new iginition module and neither have fixed the fault.
The car wasrecently serviced and has had a new battery in the last year! Any idea's would be great, or if anyone has heard of this problem before pleae let me know.
thanks!!
