Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.
So far I've built half a dozen (mostly) out of the box builds but I also have a long-term 'on again, off again' project of a Fujimi Enthusiast Dino 246 GTS. My aim for this project is to build the most perfect Dino that my abilities will allow - all the time learning more automotive modelling skills along the way! I've done a few bits to the kit so far but I thought it might be fun to share what I've done with the seating.
The kit seats represent the standard Dino seats, and don't represent them especially well. I thought it would be nice for my model to have the optional 'Daytona' insert seats. I figured that the kits seats were 'OK' as a starting point but with all the effort to convert them to a) the correct shape and b) the correct pattern inserts, I may just as well scratchbuild new seats. I suppose my approach my be unconventional but I'm simply happier working with epoxy putty than I am with styrene and other materials. Resin casting has occured to me but looking at reference photos of the real car I see that very often the driver's and passenger's seat have slightly different appearances due, I suppose, to one seat always being sat upon and the other one only sometimes being sat upon! The seat inserts have 'squidged' and slipped to differing degrees on the real car and I wanted to show that difference on my kit too. Besides, I once tried resin casting and failed miserably and it's more of a challenge to make 2 seats, so make 2 seats is what I chose to do. The kit head restraints were incorrect too but I was able to easily convert them to the correct shape. As you can see, there's still a long way to go on one of the seats, and the other one still has detail to be added. Due to the 'on again, off again' nature of this build I'll finish then as & when I am inspired to work on them. I hope the photos adequately explain what I've done. Moderators: If you feel this thread is inappropriate please move, modify or delete as neccessary - after all, it's not a WIP of a car, just a pair of seats! Re: Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.
Don't forget most of the Dino 246's with Daytona seat inserts came with the "chairs and flairs" option. Most were 246 GTS's, but a few GT's were made with the option according to several sources. Most also had the
special wider wheels with a different design. Those will be alot of work if you decide to do them. Good luck!! Your seats look great so far. Tom Tanner/Scale Designs/Ferrari Expo/Strictly 43rd revival 2010-Chicago |

Yes, I'd love to do the flares too but building those Campagnolo wheels is WAY beyond my ability!
I've seen plenty of photos of non-flared Dinos with Daytona seats (maybe retro-fitted?) and I'll be content for my model to represent one of them. |

You make it look way too easy. I can't wait to see a set of these inside a model.

Re: Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.
Wow, those are really nice. If you do end up casting them I would seriously be interested in a set.
Oh watch out when you mold in the lower section of the nose to the body, it makes it a really tight fit later on. |

Re: Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.
Thanks for your comments chaps.
jla: When i mentioned resin casting I didn't mean casting in perhaps the way you think. I meant I considered scratchbuilding just one seat and then home casting the second one (or at least part of it) for use in my model. jano: Here's an image of the Dino Campagnolo, taken from ferraris-online.com How on earth would anyone even begin to build a 1/24 version of this??!! |

Re: Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.
Hi,
I'm working on project for a 1/24 model. I create 3D parts using a software and I'm going to have them 3D printed in a couple of weeks. If you really want those wheels I can add them to my order and have them for you. I'll only need pictures of the wheel from the right angles and the dimensions (the dimensions of the tires you will use on the rims would be the best ones). PS: The rims can also be made by hand but it would take more time and patience, however it isn't impossible if you build all the simple parts first and than put them all together. |

Re: Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.
If you make them you can probably sell a few to the guys who bought
Studio 27 decals to make the Lemans 1972 NART Dino 246. I know how hard it can be. I did the old Alfa T33 wheels for my GTAM and T33/2 models. The Gunze wheels are all wrong. Every tiny oval hole had a lip that had to be duplicated. It took alot of time!! Tom Tanner/Scale Designs/Ferrari Expo-Strictly 43rd revival 2010-Chicago |

Re: Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.
Well I'll give it a go, it will make our friend Cheesey happy for sure.
Can anyone post a few good picture of these rims together with the sizes of the tires that should fit on them (I suppose it's about the Fujimi kit tires?!). Are they different size front and rear? |

Re: Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.
Jano, I'll pm you soon....I have plenty of images.
The rims are 14 inch x 7.5 inches, 1 inch wider than the stock Dino rims - same size, front & rear. I have no idea whatsoever if there are any tyres available that would fit, and would look 'period' enough. Jon. |

Re: Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.
I took a look to my Fujimi kit and inner diameter of the tires is approx. 16 mm which is very close to what is needed for the 14'' rims.

Re: Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.
So, here's a preview of the model:
![]() I'll need to know if you will use the same wheel hubs as in the Fujimi kit in order to make the wheel fit like the original Fujimi wheel. Also I need to know if you want the cap that goes on the middle of the wheel and the bolts to be one piece with the wheel. Otherwise I do not add them and you can use aftermarket metal bolts if you wish. Just let me know, what you think that needs to be changed. Cheers, Ioan |

Re: Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.
That is sensational! Would it be possible to add the two areas I've marked in red in the photograph below? Also, I notice you've modelled the small holes between each wheel nut hole - would it alos be possible to do the hole for the valve? Save me drilling it
![]() As for the hub/fitting question, I think without the cap would be better - then I could use a metal or styrene rod to push through the central hole, and into the Fujimi hub. If the rod is shaped to have a domed top it would nicely represent the wheel's central cap. Does that make sense? Is it a good idea? My model will be dispalyed with 2 wheels off of the car (to show the suspension etc) and will have the spare wheel displayed outside of the car too. So, I think holes instead of wheel nuts would be good - I would then only need to use aftermarket/scratch wheel nuts for the two wheels that will be displayed attached to the car. I'll send you phtographs of my work so far on the front suspension so you know what I mean. ![]() This thread has taken an unexpected turn in an unexpected direction and it's left my seats in the shade somewhat! I hope to be able to post photos of one finished seat in the next couple of days but I suspect your wheels will make my seats look rather silly! ![]() I'm so amazed by what's happening - I really wanted to make a 'chairs & flares' Dino but I never expected I'd be able to. I am truly happy and grateful for your input! Jon. |
