over drive lockout static noise

i just bought an 89 grand marquis. everything on it seems fine until tonight im driving it home and i was shifting gears to see if they all worked and when in overdrive lockout it makes a soft static-like noise which i can only hear inside the car. i know nothing of these types of cars and have no clue what it could be. it drives just fine in overdrive lockout. also my borther had the ebreak on and drove in reverse now there is a scrubbing sound when im driving....any ideas what it is? one more thing... is the speedometer supposed to light up so i can see how fast im going?? if it is maybe i have it turned off? how do you turn it on. any help for a newb is much appreciated.

Re: over drive lockout static noise

these cars were known to have torque converter shudder, drop your pan change your fluid and filter, also remove the rubber (maybe already gone) grommet on the botton of the bell housing, rotate torque converter until you you see the drain plug. drain all fluid from the converter. this should take car of your overdrive noise.
there set of e brake shoes inside the rear rotors, the lining has probaly come off.
if its a analog cluster, remove the cluster and install the light bulb behind it. if its digital it could be a instrument cluster issue.
hope this will help
