Replacing a bulb above the license plate
Hello,
I am having a HECK of a time trying to change out the license plate bulbs on a 1996 Sunfire. I am able to take off the black cover that holds the bulb holder and turn the holder itself. But, I cannot take it out and replace it. I am unable to find any information on how to do it anywhere (or if I'm even doing it right). Both bulbs are burnt out, so, it is a must before I get pulled over. Anyone do this lately?!?! Thanks!!!! |

Re: Replacing a bulb above the license plate
I have a 1998 Sunfire and what I had to do was take the back part off the trunk lid and change the bulbs that way.
I know that the holders twist out, but I couldn't twist them as is, so I took it apart and changed the bulbs that way. Hope this helps. Reading it I kinda onfused myself. Let me know if you have problems

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. So, I need to take off the black plastic that holds the Pontiac "light up" sign and license lights. The plastic seems to be on pretty good. Will it attach back as securely if I pull that off? Thanks for the information! |

Re: Replacing a bulb above the license plate
Pop your trunk.
Look at the back, there are some nuts that have a black tar of sorts in them. Take them off, remove your back assembly from the trunk lid. Change the bulbs and put it back together. I re-read what I wrote and it overcomplicated a simple thing.

Re: Re: Replacing a bulb above the license plate
Hello,
I have taken off the "nuts" from the deck of the trunk. There were six in all and they were made of plastic or something because half of them basically just broke apart. It looked like this was all of them. I am still unable to pull the component away from the trunk. It is to the point that if I pull any harder, I will start breaking the plastic. There are lights (brake, tail, etc.) that are still hooked up, but there is enough slack in the wires that I should still be able to pull it away. Are there any more nuts that I am forgeting? I have looked everywhere! I think I am close, but, it seems like it is still hooked into something. Thanks for all of the help so far! |

Re: Replacing a bulb above the license plate
There are a few in there that are sort of hidden. I think there were 8 all together.

Re: Replacing a bulb above the license plate
I found 2 more nuts and was able to remove the plastic. I replaced the bulbs, which appeared to be blown out (they were mirrored so it was hard to tell). When I replaced them they still did not work. I checked the fuse box and couldn't seem to find a fuse for those particular lights. I'm guessing it's an electrical issue. I think I may just take it to a mechanic. Thanks for your help!

Re: Re: Replacing a bulb above the license plate
It is now working! The bulbs were burnt out. But, one thing I found out that some people may not know. Now, I am not at all mechanically inclined when it comes to these types of things, but, I found that once I replaced the bulbs, the only way I could test the license lights were if the car was running (or past accessory). If you just turn the lights on without the key in the ignition, all other lights will turn on except the license lights.
Just something I wanted to pass on. I don't know, maybe most people know this. But, I sure didn't. Thanks for all help! |

Re: Replacing a bulb above the license plate
Tillemam,
Thanks. I was wondering if I had a major wiring issue after I changed my bulbs. What a silly setup. LOL
