serpentine belt

I have a 98 lumina LTZ with a 3.1 engine my problem is my air conditioning pump is shot. now before i go and buy a replacemebt pully for the pump i have been told that i should be able to buy a smaller serpentine belt instead of a replacement pully is this correct

Re: serpentine belt

No I don't think so...if I remember right, you run into a situation where you'd have to either reverse rotation direction on other pulleys or have a less than adequate belt wrap around them if you delete the A/C's wrap on the 3.1....
