It is Time! To PAINT!!!!

Okay so here's whats going down, my car needs to get painted before winter... I have no garage, no tools, no spray guns, and barely no (extra) money!
I was reading through some pages on the internet about painting your car with the roller method. This got me interested and began researching about it and reading comments. I am now from tonight, on a mission to paint my car...

I will keep in touch with everyone here on the lumina forum as my progress grows! expect lots of pictures! And maybe this method is for you. Let me be the one to test it for you!

The list of materials will be as followed (Average cost $50):

• 1 Gal Acrylic-Enamel Paint (Rustoleum Professional Protective Enamel, Tremclad)

• 1 Gal 100% Mineral Spirits (Available at some Sears, also at Advance Auto Parts)

• 4 4'' Ultra-smooth foam rollers

• 80/100/200/600/800/1000 grit sandpaper

Hopefully sometime in the next week I will get started... Im going to fundraise for the money to buy the materials through my friends (they all want it to be painted). Its really ugly I will put original pics. up when I start.

P.s. - Feel free to ask about it, and if I havent gotten back to you fine people in this forum within a week, let me know! and I'll try to speed things up. Oh!, and im not sure what color I want I havent looked at my selection ,but my girlfriend wants it a nice bright green, and I want it a nice midnight blue? No idea!

Thought about painting mine midnight blue at the top then fade into black at the bottom with red highlights. ofcourse followed up with a clear coat. looking at about $1,200 to $1,500. then getting the windows tinted 27% on the sides and 35% in the back. its a money issue with me as well. dumped so much under the hood, now im poor peeps...

My Vote:

lime green, black racing stripes: Even though it ain't no 1970 Dodge Charger, you can pretend it is!
Especially if you add Flowmasters or cherrybombs (heh heh)

lol i already have cherry bombs on my lumina she wakes the neighbourhood, going to get some flowmasters though

Lime green is a no no for a lumina. Would look pretty fugly uneless you have a body kit to make it match. Id say midnight blue.

I used this roller method on my 96 (guess what color) WHITE/gray lumina. The paint on my hood was almost all the way gone and the rest of the car was looking like a cow. I sanded down the edges of the old paint so it was a nice clean transition and started painting. It turned out fairly good. The rustoleom gloss white and stock white match fairly well. It’s not a perfect color match but you can't notice you aren’t looking for it. You can make the paint job look like a pro did it, or you can make it look good from 5-10 feet away depending on how much time you spend wet sanding and how many coats you want to do. It took me a month doing a couple coats a week and spending an hour or so each session. The worst part of painting it was dealing with the oil based paint. It smells and is a pain to clean up. Now I hope none of the other paint will start peeling this winter. Oh-well we will see. Good luck with your paint job!

By the way, does anyone know the best method and right products to do a repair paint job on some rusty corners, and have the paint really stick and last a long time (10 plus years?)?

I am wondering what treatment to use on the rusty metal and what to use for a bonding or undercoat.
