Red face 99 SE tick

I have read about the lifter tick issue with the 99's, but my issue doesnt seem to quite fit. I have a ticking noise-just 1, not like the noise is comming from multiple areas-that speeds up with the engine speed. Sometimes it goes away while driving, but anytime I sit idle like at a light I can hear it. It does not effect driveability or engine idle.

I just got the car and and want to get it figured out. I also need to know how to adjust the e-brake and what whould cause the brake and abs lights to be on.

Re: 99 SE tick

Ok, the noise seems to be comming from the end of the motor with the pullies. It is a 2.4 twin cam if that helps.

Re: 99 SE tick

How many miles on this 2.4 ??

Could be the cam or even the power steering pump ticking.

The only way to tell whats causing the service light to come on would be to get it scanned with an ABS capable scan tool, no other way.

On the ebrake, I'll get back to you.... thier should be a thread or two covering this already.

Re: 99 SE tick

The car has 155,974 miles. How do I see if its the power steering pump? Because a couple of times I have heard a moan like the power steering fluid was low, but it is not.

Thanks for the help.

Re: 99 SE tick

You need to isolate the source of the noise, you can use a long screwdriver is a wooden dowel.
With it running, being carefull not to get into anything moving, put the end on the possible noise culprit and listen to your ear.

Also if your power steering fluid is black you could need the system flushed out, it should be clear.
These are prone to power steering pump failures from contaminated fluid(dirty/blackish).

Re: 99 SE tick

I will try to define the area tomorrow. I used a long screwdriver to figure out where the noise area was. I will also check the ps fluid. Thanks

Re: 99 SE tick

I had my brother-in-law listen to it yesterday and he said that it is a lifter tick, it can just be fairly loud at first. Do you know anything about the power lock system on these cars?

Re: 99 SE tick

Lifter tick can sometimes be cleared up with some Sea Foam engine treatment.

What do you mean "power lock system" ??

Re: 99 SE tick

Is it safe to use sea foam in a car with that high of mileage?

As for the power locks, the passenger side and back doors wont open when using the remote so I have to unlock them manually. They wont even unlock if I hit the unlock button on the driver door. But they will lock by remote and door switch. The passenger door does not unlock with the key either. I guess the previous owner got locked out and busted something when breaking back in. So I know the passenger tumbler is bad, but why wont the doors unlock?

Re: 99 SE tick

Yes its safe to add the Seam foam in small amounts to clean up lifters. It is the seafoam injection cleaner, just add 2-3 oz to your oil, run it a few hundred miles then change your oil.

If it still does it you might try adding it to your new oil and see if it doesnt clear up the noise. If it doesnt then your lifter could be broken.

Ok I wasnt sure if you were talking about your door locks..
Sounds like a fuse or relay is not working.
I'd also check that the plugs are clean and connected fully inside the door.

hope that helps
