Well, the 4.0 liter is fairly quick, and the 318 v-8(5.2 liter?) is quick, but likes fuel. Anything with 160,000 miles is going to be less reliable (esp. true in the part-time 4wd versions). I personally dis-like them, but thats only an opinion.

Corning,
Are you referring to the Grand Cherokee or the Cherokee. These are two completely different vehicles. I ask because the Cherokee wasnt available with the V8 and comes standard with the part time 4WD which has prooven to be very reliable (on the 4X4 versions of course).

87Luxury,
As far as 160000 miles being alot on a Cherokee. If its been maintained, its still got alot of life left. Its not unusual to see Cherokees well into 200000 miles. Even if you end up replacing stuff after awhile, parts are inexpensive and easy to find. The Cherokees had a long run with very few changes so lots of parts are available.
As far as are they fast. Its not a sports car. Its a 4X4 SUV and yours will more than likely end up in the junkyard for someone else to pick cheap parts from if you drive it like a sports car. That being said, the 4.0 is known for its torquey nature and is rated at about 190 HP. Thats more than enough to move the lightweight Cherokee down the road briskly.

Ray H.,

I see now you were refering to a cherokee. Lemme tell ya a story about one i had. It was a 94 4WD 4-door w/ a 4.0 HO. I put it through the worst stuff i could find with a set of bias ply grip spurs, and i almost couldn't get it stuck. And it was nearly bullet-proof at that. Again, I'm sorry for the mixup, but i think the cherokee is a fine auto.

Re: 160000-too many miles on a cherokee?

I have an '88, 4.0, 4X4 with 202,227 miles, runs great and this weekend it's going to be bouncing around the desert for three days. I have no problem taking it anywhere.

Is is fast, well, it's quicker than a loaded cement truck. Reliable, always. Cheap to maintain, well, depends, you can spend as much as you want to on it, but, parts are easy to get and not all that expensive.

In the past year since I bought it I've replaced the radiator and related cooling stuff (by choice); an alternator and most of the sensors and just put on a new exhaust system yesterday. No real problems and always starts (ok, well, except for that afternoon with the crank sensor - I carry a sapre now).

It may not be a shiny new Hummer, but it had no problem pulling an H3 out of the mud a few weeks ago. Too many miles? It's just getting broke in

Re: 160000-too many miles on a cherokee?

Since my 89 has 170K, I'm going to say no. But really it depends on how well it was taken care of by the PO. I bought mine 2 1/2 yrs ago from the OO (original owner)with 155K on thte clock. He was the principal of the local high school (now retired) and it was serviced regularly by the autoshop class. All records (and student's grades!!!) were provided.

Re: 160000-too many miles on a cherokee?

'92 XJ Laredo 4.0 HO with 165K. Engine is great, but surrounding pieces start to wear out. I bought mine in May 2001 with 141K on it. So far, I've replaced the front windshield wiper motor assembly (all sold as a unit), the rear wiper motor (just froze one day), rear main seal (dirty, dirty job), brakes, water pump, radiator, front passenger side bearing, and then all the usualy wear-and-tear items like air filter, wipers, etc. So again, the engine runs really well (knock on wood), but some of the other things can add up $$. If you don't mind tinkering with it, I think it's a pretty good investment, i.e., parts are cheap and readily available...and thanks to this cool forum, and the helpful people who post here, you can usually get good advice on how to make it through some repairs.

Ciao
