Quick Timing Belt Questions...

I just bought a used '96 Accord LX sedan (w/ the F22B2 - non-VTEC engine); it has 123000 miles on it, and I have no maintenance records. The first item of business it to change the timing belt. I have found several write ups about doing this, and I have a downloaded FSM, but all of the procedures are for the F22B1 VTEC engines.

1) Can anyone confirm that the procedures are the same for both engines, or is the F22B2 different?

2) Also and I want to make sure I take care of anything else that is important while the timing belt is getting done; what else should I change? I know that the other 2 drive belts need to be done, as well as the water pump; should I also have engine seals done during this time, and if so which ones?

3) I see that the valve cover has to come off to access the timing belt cover, so it seems like a good time to change plugs/wires/dist cap and rotor --- anything else that you all recommend?

I have heard about a special kit for the crank seal. They used to pop out after replacement. I would inquire about them.
Other then that I guess you are on the right treck.

my oil pump drive seal popped out and i lost oil pressure...honda made a retainer for it...should have 2 belts..balance shaft belt and timing belt...first you should put the engine dampner on the tdc mark on timing cover...remove valve cover and timing covers..adjusting the valves is very important..doing this on a cold engine is best( i wouldnt do it hot cause it could end up being over tight...heat expands)you have to adjust valves on each cyl when all valves are closed..... get a haynes manual ADJUST YOUR VALVES

My Accord is 2000 4 cyl and the engine is F23a4, I'm using instruction from F22b, they are identical.

Thanks for the link to the kit. I guess everything in the kit is the same for VTEC and non VTEC?

Your welcome. Vtec is just solenoids and special lifts inside the cylinder head, has nothing to do with belts and etc. As long as Vtec and non Vtec has the same engine code eg: F23a1 to F23a4, externaly they mostly used the same parts.

If you like you can contact the ebay seller, they will tell you. I got my kit from the same seller in 2-3 days, very fast shipping. They gave me some OEM parts too.

Your not putting this on yourself are you? If you do you will need to buy the crank pulley socket key to unbolt the pulley.

I was planning on doing the work myself ... until yesterday. Through various calls to Honda USA and local dealers, I was able to get confirmation that a timing belt service was done on my car at 87,000 miles (I'm at 123,000 now ) --- so now I have the time and $$$ to chase down a couple of other grimlins: a vibration in my idle when in gear (it gets worse under engine load, ie. AC compressor kicks in, pushing window buttons after window all the way up, etc) and what seems to be harsh shifting and late upshifting in the tranny.

Any thoughts ... anyone?
