Sigh...Jetta on life support

Well these past 5 days i was on a vacation cruise I had gotten from one of the insurance companies we work with here, that was alot of fun. But before that though I was driving the jetta over to the port and as we approached we heard a loud SNAP. I'm like WTF. I start losing power, im getting barely any response from the car. We made it to the port.

My dad then took the car so he could drive it back to his house. On his way back the car shut off and did not turn back on. He got it towed back to his house. Looks like the timing belt snapped, which really sucks cause I was gonna change it at 100k miles, guess it didnt want to go till then.

Well we got back from the cruise yesterday and my dad picked me up with his car (sebring) at 10:30 AM. so we load up our stuff and drive off. about 5 minutes into driving we hear a CLACK CLACK CLACK sound and the car starts losing power and eventually turns off. we were stuck waiting for a tow truck till 2PM. The car got towed to a mechanic.

Later my dad called me and told me that the timing belt snapped on his car and the engine blew at 67,000 miles. It would cost 1500 to rebuild his engine. he hasnt decided what he's going to do yet. Next week the jetta is going to be checked out to see if there was any major damage when the timing belt snapped.

Son of a bitch, is all i can say...

Re: Sigh...Jetta on life support

There is a dark cloud hanging over you, dude. Sorry to hear about the Jetta. Hopefully, there was no damage.

My wife has had 3 timing belt replacements in the 198k miles she's had the car (60k mile intervals). It has been cheaper to replace each time. I decided we're not doing it again; although probably due at 200k...

Re: Sigh...Jetta on life support

Im preparing for the worst and looking for a car that isnt too much that I can add to the financing that I still owe for the jetta which is just about a year and it is paid off, I'm not going to make the move to buy a car yet, just standing by to keep the option open.

Sucks that it happened when it did, if there is no damage and the timing belt just needs to be changed then good. If there is damage i have to see how much it will cost and if it will be worth fixing.

My dad isnt going to fix his car, he said screw it its not worth fixing the piece of crap so he's junking it. He's going to lease an altima.

Altima is a nice car. Is he looking at the 2 door or the 4?

Re: Sigh...Jetta on life support

I dont know which one he is looking at right now.

Unfortunately for me I drive way too much to lease a car since you have to sign a contract for either 12k or 15k miles a year and if you go over you have to pay for those extra miles. so till we figure out what to do, both my girl and I are carpooling with the RX-8 to work since my job is on the way to hers.

yeah i guess it's bad when have have to carpool in an RX8. Michelle rodriguez says the car gods are unhappy with you, fix the jetta, paint it white, and watch out for the motorcyclists with automatic submachine guns.

And seriously, it does suck. almost seems too weird to be coincidence.

It would get better miliage if you didn't red line it every day and take it up to 100 as per the dealership instructions.

Re: Sigh...Jetta on life support

Yeah my gir'ls timming belt blew on her eclipse one time on her way to work. Gotian was passing by and was kind enough to lend me the Jetta for a few days till the Eclipse was rebuilt. Sorry dude but if your belt blew you know you bent valves and maybe cracked a piston or two. even at idle my old tallon bent 3 valves so yeah there is no escaping the damage to the head.

Your dad was at 67K miles.....dealer says to replace timming belts at 60K....thats kinda right there huh? they should have a light come on and say "either replace now or die" on the dash. The Jetta was way past the service schedule too. Dude the guy that fixed Char's car can probably help you out too.

The eclipse had 5 bent valves, one shattered, 1 cracked piston, one scratched pleanty bad and damage to the bottom of the head. I told him I just needed it to run long enough to sell it and he used junk-yard parts as opposed to new or machine-refurbished (SP?) parts. The damage to rebulit the engine was about 1800 but he did it all for 600 bucks. it wassnt a hook up either, he simply skipped on the quality stuff and the machine shop ballancing and surfacing. Car ran fine for 4 months and I sold it.

Im off on Thursday if you wanna go see him. I'll go with ya and introduce you.

True.

Got to keep that thing up to service though man. The 6G72's (3S motor) are always supposed to be changed every 60k miles. The motor I have now I changed it at 55k just to be safe. Such a small thing to change for what lies on it's shoulders.

Musashi, you already introduced me to him when we went to pick up the eclipse. Right now the jetta is sitting at my dad's house so first im gonna see what this mechanic says, if he cant help me then we can see what your guy says.
