94 Olds Cutlass Supreme Engine Cooling Fan
First off, I know there is MANY topics about my situation or like it...
I'm gradually fixing issues with my car, because I love it, and I want to keep it. Ok, like I say in the topic, the raditor fan that is spose to run when no A/C is on will not come on. It has come on spontaniously, and only stays on 5 seconds. When I rant he A/C today, the A/C cooling fan comes on, and oddly the regular engine cooling fan also did. But after it getting to normal running temps, the engine cooling fan did not keep coming on, but the A/C fan did. Temp will go past 220 and no fan will come on, without A/C running. This is only after several hours of running OR sitting at red lights. Things I've done: 1. Has new head gasket. Was never blown. 2. New 180 thermostat, did have a 195 when head gasket was installed. 3. New water Pump. Actually made it run cooler when it's not over heating. 4. Have replaced the Tempture sensor near the thermostat. 5. Replaced the fan relays in the fuse box under the hood. Suggestions would be appreciated. |

Re: 94 Olds Cutlass Supreme Engine Cooling Fan
The way I understand it the fan has a built in temp sensor thatt ells it when to flip on du to engine compartment heat. I could be wrong.

Check the connections on the radiator cooling fan, and the wires.
Test the fan with a direct wire connected to a battery, with it unpluged. Your fan motor could be malfunctioning. I'd also double check the temp sensor wires that they are not damaged. Also check the AC compressor wires and plug connector. and Welcome to AF.

Re: 94 Olds Cutlass Supreme Engine Cooling Fan
Thanks for the responses, much appreciated.
I will be replacing the fan motor sometime soon. I know the fan motor does work, but I also do believe it could be malfunctioning. Also possiblity like Grumbles said, it could have a temp sensor in it or just the fan is going bad. I've checked all the wires running from the fan (blue & gray wires) through the route they run. I've not seen any problems it should have. Also have checked the Temp Sensor wires, and see no problems. Thanks again for replies, and it's really nice to be here. Hopefully I might be able to assist someone in the future here. *EDIT* FIXED! Well today I learned that the Coolant Temp "Sensor" and the Coolant Temp Switch are two different things. For a long time I thought the two were called different things to different people, then I looked a wiring diagram on Autozone.com and learned that the Coolant Temp Sensor is for the guage, and the Coolant Temp Switch sends the single for the Main cooling fan to come on. Also I was confused on where the temps were and when the fan should kick on, but my car was still overheating sense the needle would go into the orange. Here is a diagram of how the temps are during the operation of my car. Picture is from my cars manual. Last edited by Dastardly; 09-23-2007 at 10:08 PM. |
