Bathurst

How many of our downunder members sat down and watched the race today?

Have to say that with a good TV and good company even a V8 race can be good (cheers Mr and Mrs Panda)

Highlight of the race: (for me) was Jim Richards and Mark Skaife finishing in first and Jims son Steven Richards finishing second. The third member of the family finishing 11th with Kean Kiwi Racing.

low point of the race: Greg Murphy being given a 5 minute penalty for a fuel spill in pit lane (so ending his chanced of wining). Race officials :finger4:

Although it was funny watching Murph storm out of the car past his pit crew into the portaloo, repeating "FIVE FUCKING MINUTES"

I wondered who would be the first to start a bathurst thread.
I did it last year, but thought I would leave it to someone else this year.

I have to agree with your best and worst race moments!

Poor murph, he really did not deserve that penalty. Yes the pit crew fucked up, but its motorsport. It's dangerous and mistakes happen, the officals should be more aware of that.
Hell it could have been a Kiwi 1, 2, 3 if had been allowed to stay in the race, he was clearly on track for at least a top 5 finnish.

I started watching it about lap 9, and then watched most of it with a 30min break to run a GT3 race, and of course the damn news got in the way.

Its a shame they never showed the prize giving though, it would be interesting to see if the Aussies had learned to shut up. (but then Jim was driving a Holden this time, and most aussies now think hes is an australian)

I'm just suprised it took the motorsports owners soo long to get Skaife and Richards back in the same car after thier success' in '90 and '91.
they make an awsome team, Skaie goes hard and gains position and then Jim hops in and consolidates the position then in the end Skaife goes HARD even with a 90% blocked air intake (I glad they made it across the line and didn't end up like Lowndes)

Thats very sad that that happened!
The fans on the top of the hill are all responsible for what happened there, and I would really hate to be the one who has to clean up the mess tomorrow morning.

But it does show the slightly differnt designs of the two cars.
The Holdens draw air both from above and below the splitter, so when the splitter got clogged with the bags, there was still enough air flow to keep the engine cool enough for it to run.
The Ford however only draws air throught the splitter. So when it clogged buy buy V8. But it was only lowndes, I dont like the little prick, he's far to imature, and has ruined to potential race wins for Greg Murphy by making very simply and stupid mistakes. (like parking the car in a wall)

However the amount of "bag" puns the commentator was able to come up with did add a level of humor to the end of the race.

Sat there and watched the whole race...awesome finish.
Touch and go at the end if they would make it after picking up all the rubbish in there intake, but i was very happy to see the Holdens filling the top 5 places.

Highlights The return of Peter Brook and seeing all the Fords getting there arses kicked !!
Lowpoint Murphy being given 5 minute penalty

Some observations...

The guys on the hill I spoke to were telling me that Brockie was flat stick all weekend just making appearances with the fans, signing all sorts of stuff and just chatting, let alone driving the car. Having grown up (and meeting him years ago) as one of my race car idols it was great to see him back where he belongs - even if he is there just as a team owner next year, the event is richer for his presence.

In 1980 it was 'The Rock' ending a Falcon's progress in the race and this year it was a plastic bag. The Great Race wouldn't be what it is without all of this stuff happening - even the very unfortunate incident with Murph's fuel filler is part of that. Incidentally, the TWR Australia Team (ie K-Mart) uses a system of lights on its pit rig so the controller isn't supposed to let the car go until ALL the lights (which are activated by toggle switches on the air guns and on the fuel rig by the crew) are green signalling all clear.

With this being the 40th Great Race, it was kind of fitting to have Skaife and Gentlemen Jim back up there. After the low point of the infamous incident on the podium it's nice to see Holden fans can finally forgive and forget. Most folk forget that Jim lost a close mate that day (NZ's only F1 driver's champion Denis Hulme) so it was kind of a day of redemption for all concerned.

Another low point for me was TV1's coverage of the race...it sucked.
Why do we have to have bloody add breaks and then stop so we can all watch the 6pm news for 30 minutes.
Screw the adds !!!.....most cases the adds are only showing whats on TV this week anyway
GIVE IT BACK TO TV3 MAYBE ???

yeah the TV coverage did leave alot to be desired. Why is it though that all the good crashed / incidents etc. happen during the adds?

Funniest thing was when they were talking to Murph during a pace car as he saw the large marque blown into the sand trap. "Is that a tent?"

I watched parts of Bathurst.

But since I was on a school geography trip to Rotorua, I watched it on a pocket tv, which needed to be retuned after every corner in the road.

But from what i've seen it was a good race.
