02 Silverado 2500HD - strange noise
I have a 2002 Silverado 2500HD that is making a strange noise (high pitch) which appears to be coming from the drive shaft area. The noise starts as soon as I put it in drive and then appears to fade away, once I get up to a certain speed and then returns again when I slow down. I don't hear the noise in reverse. Someone mentioned to me yesterday that the CV joint may need to be greased. Not sure if there is a grease fitting for this. Does anyone know? Could it be the CV joint causing this? Does anyone have a idea as to what it would cost to get this fixed by a service center?

Re: 02 Silverado 2500HD - strange noise
Interesting! I had a similar problem with my 1500. It would happen at low speeds, between 20 and 30mph. It was a hum that was really pronounced when letting off the gas and decelerating, but would also do it during acceleration. I took it to the dealership and had a friend keep it for several days. Of course, they could not duplicate it, though it happened several times with my friend, myself and a tech. in the truck before I left them the truck. I was told it could be an air leak from the window, or air making something on the outside whistle. None of the possible causes were logical to me, so when I got it back, I put the truck on jack stands. I then put the truck in gear and listened underneath the truck. I could hear the vibration strongly in the frame, near the engine/transmission. Again, it was at about the same low rpm. Well, after giving up on trying to find it (I thought, if something broke, then I would definitely know what the problem was!), it went away. I have not heard it in about a year. I know that I did not help your situation at all, but I thought that I would throw that out to you. I hate having a problem that is intermittent. It's easier if it just breaks, so you know what to fix. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!!

check your universal joints, the way you drscribe it thats where I would begin. I have seen this on a few trucks, the noise can go away to come back later when the u joint actually fails.

Re: 02 Silverado 2500HD - strange noise
I personally changed them both (all 3 u joints and the carrier bearing) at the same time, the carrier bearing gets pressed on and off almost exactly like the ujoints, or if theres a machine shop , like napa they will do the carrier bearing ussually for $15-$20.

So, since I opened my big mouth, the sound came back Saturday morning. That'll teach me a lesson!
