Talking The Vodka and Pancakes 350Z

This is the AMT Tokyo Drift 350Z which I renamed The Vodka and Pancakes 350Z after Gtmike400's favorite meal at college. Yeah, he just loves that for an early breakfast around 3 or 4am.

Then when he saw this car last weekend he said he was glad he hadn't just eaten that just before he saw it or he would have puked for sure.

Here's to you, Mike..enjoy!

I didn't have a vision for this build when I started it nor did I take it very seriously. The multi fade paint scheme was a spur of the moment idea..it consists of Cobra Colors WR Blue, Giallo Spyder, House of Kolor Violet Pearl, Sally Hansen pearl orange and gold mixed(which turned bronze over the Giallo Spyder). It's cleared with TS Clear and polished. The top wing plane is bronze cf decal from SMS.

The decals are from Aoshima's AutoExe Miata which I trimmed to fit the Z.

The rims are Pegasus 23" which are still smaller than he kit rims therefor much more realistic.

The interior is Acryl Aircraft Interior Black with Giallo Spyder on the seatbacks and steering wheel. I made chrome tread plate floor mats using styrene tread plate painted with Alclad Chrome.

The model is built as a curbside(I glued the hood on) out of the box except for the rims...so you can decide if it has the potential you're looking for.

Except for the right panel line of the rear bumper as nice as always.
Was a good idea to take smaller wheels, the really look better than the kits parts shown on the box.

He did better 'n that, Tonio - he made a silk purse out of that hot steamer!

I'm still scratching my head over how Brian could've dragged something that pretty kicking and screaming out of this kit, but hey, no matter; it can be done, all the more credit to the builder.

Hey Brian - have you checked with Leon about putting that in the Cobra Colors gallery of finished models?

Reminds me of something I saw in a book about airbrushes once...

Your paint work is remarkable. So remarkable, I made this remark about its remarkability. It's also sparkly; like a holiday.

Re: The Vodka and Pancakes 350Z

So there IS hope for this pile of junk. Do you think there is any hope of saving the front emblem under any layers of paint at all? Keep up the great work!

Re: The Vodka and Pancakes 350Z

I ain't Veyron, but I can take a shot at this -

I also used CobraColors paints on a kit with some pretty faint scripts, but I was able to keep them by using a technique developed by a talented builder named "bluemoose" on the Hobby Heaven board.

You use Bare-Metal, Detail Master, Mr Foil, or whatever adhesive foil you favor straight on the bare plastic before you prime and paint it, trimming it as close as possible to the script. Then with each successive coat of primer and color, you take a lacquer thinner-soaked toothpick and rub the paint off the script. Once you have this technique down, your plastic scripts can rival photoetch in sharpness.

From what I recall of the 350, the script has a good chance of making it through this treatment.

Re: The Vodka and Pancakes 350Z

Thanks all!

I don't recall seeing any scripts molded into the body.

The kit provides the scripts as decals.

Brian- There is a Veilside badge on the front nose. But yea, they included the Nissan emblems to cover over it anyway.
