I have a 1996 Sunfire 2.2l auto.
I started having problems with this car about 2 weeks ago. While driving the car just stalled. After about 10 minutes the car started again. Made it about 1 mile down the road and the car stalled again. This time it started up again after about 5 minutes and was fine for about two weeks. Then two nights ago it cut out about 20 miles from home. It started again no problem and drove it just about home before it stalled again. Ended up pushing the car home two blocks. Tried it about an hour later and still nothing. Next day wife needs to go to college so she takes the car. Lasts the 15 minute drive to the college. On the way home it stalled and wouldn't start for a few hours. We had to tow it home. Now the car lasts until it gets to normal operating temp no matter what. About 10 minutes even at an idle. When the car stalls the car starts going crazy. The temp gauge zeros and then once in awhile goes up to the temp the car is on. The speed gauge is constant moving up and down even though the car is still. The daytime running lights are on and flash once in awhile. The fuel relay clicks like crazy when the car key is on after it stalls but not if it starts. There is a round part that is directly across from the relay that has one wire harness going in the top of it that is also clicking like crazy when the car stalls and the key is on. The fan starts moving once in awhile for no reason. It also does this sometimes after the car stalls even after it cools down 100% it will still not start and do all the above. So pretty much car will start then stall after about 10 minutes then it will turn over but not start. Please give me some ideas of stuff I can check for or what you guys think it could be. I can fix anything if someone tells me what it is ThanksSteve |

Also the check engine light flashes when the car stalls or it won't start.

I wish someone would respond to you, mine is doing the exact same stuff. I think i might just have to call the good ole' Pontiac dealer Monday, when it gets electrical I don't trust the local mechanic. I was wondering in mine if it was the computer, I don't get why all the lights would come on if not. I have heard throughout the years, if you get a new computer, to buy it from the dealer as opposed to napa, cause the car companies update the computers instead of just cleaning them up.

Me too. It is still setting. I tryed to check the ignition module but it tested good. What a hard thing to get to and it tested good! Still unsure.

Can you hear the fuel pump come on when you turn the key back to on after this happens. I had the same problem and the dealer said i had a bad fuel pump.
Put a new pump on and didnt fix the problem. Turns out there was a bad connection under the steering wheel. Try reaching up under the steering wheel after this happens and push up on any wires you can feel. Worked for me, good luck. |
