It was also the first trans-Atlantic communications satellite, launched in 1963, I believe. It could handle a whopping 100 phone calls at once. It was knocked out after a few weeks due to exposure to harmful radiation, that aerospace engineers did not know about at the time.

Okay, I'm a fountain of useless information.

Re: Telstar??

ROFL@ Magic Rat.

It's basically a Mazda 626, the first one was introduced in 1983 to replace the ageing Mk5 Cortina in Australia and New Zealand with Carbied 1.6 and 2.0 engines.

The second was introduced in 1988, the engine range was a carbed 2.0 SOHC 4 cylinder (81 Kw) or an Injected 2.0 DOHC 4 cylinder (109 Kw), the body styles offered were a hatch (Known as the TX5), sedan and station wagon. The JDM version got a 4 Wheel Steering option as well.

The Third generation came in 1992 It scored standard fuel injection (I'm pretty sure) across the range and added the option of a Mazda 2.5 DOHC V6. It was by far the best Telstar of the bunch and came in Sedan and hatch form with the 2nd Generation station wagon staying on until the entire range died in 1997.

In 1997 Vehicle Assembly New Zealand shut down the Ford plant in Wiri (Just South of Auckland), this dried up the Telstar supply to Australia and New Zealand and from that point on the two countries imported the Mondeo fully built up from Belguim.

However Japanese production continued in 1995 there was a fourth generation model based off the Mazda Capella and then the fifth Generation came in 1998 with a rebadged Mazda 626/Capella from 1997. I think that went until 2002 when the Mazda6 was released and there was no Telstar after that....
