97 Grand Cherokee-No crank, no lights, ticking on passenger side

so- I get in my 97 JGC and turn the key and--nothing no chime, no interior lights, no cranking starter- and there is a ticking sound coming from the passenger side when I return the ignition key to the first position. I have taken really good care of the car (140K miles), changing oil every time I get the "service engine soon" message- the battery is new, etc.

I disconnected the battery to save it, but I have no idea what this could be.

What happened? Is it a fried relay? I am facing a tow and I want to minimize the nonsense at the mechanic's.

Has anyone seen this? What should I do?

Re: 97 Grand Cherokee-No crank, no lights, ticking on passenger side

Thank you all so much in advance for helping me- I really need this car to work- recently married and this is my sole means of transportation.

I have read other posts and it seems like it could be

1. Loose battery wire (red)
2. CPS (maybe?)
3. the computer (hopefully not)

What do you pros think?

I think for starts you need to know if that battery was drained or still has a full charge. Try to get a jump from another vehicle and see what happens. If you get going from that then start looking for why the battery was dead. Door not closed all the way? Courtesy lights on all night? etc. If a jump start attempt leaves you with no joy then you need to start trying to figure why you aren't getting voltage to the starter to even turn over.

I've had something like that happen to my '96. I got out of work and turned the key and nothing at all. I waited a minute, wiggled the shifter and then the key and it started right up. At first it thought it was a short somewhere but i really have no idea. Could that be the CPU.

Your thing sounds like the neutral safety switch.
