arcade like steering?

my steering is going to hell right now...i think its my power steering pump...you can hear it wind when turning, and sometimes the power steering will kick completly off until i turn the wheel to the left. also while driving you can kind of feel the wheel jerk a little and stick in a few spots. its like i'm playing cruising usa or something?

does anybody know how much a new pump costs and how to fix it?
i'm pretty much broke at the moment...rent kicked my ass.
i get paid today so i should be able to fix it this weekend. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance

oh and also last night the when i was backing out of a spot the wheel kind of locked in place and when i turned it back left i heard a pop, this happened 2 or 3 times..i dunno what that is...
when i looked at the pump while a friend was turning the wheel i noticed that one of the lines seems to be getting torqued what does that mean?

Re: arcade like steering?

hahaha yeah this guy was pretty fucking honest though. i think he was giving me the dealership costs though. he was telling me to do it myself because he knew they were ripping me off. but yeah he jacked the car up and brought me and my friend under to point out the problem. which was pretty damn obvious haha. but yeah they do rip you off. anyways i still need help with this

Re: arcade like steering?

ok if you need transport to work go buy a super cheap junker that drives and earn enough money to fix it and jack the car up and disassembel what you need to then when you can afford the part its just a matter of putting it in then put everything back together

Re: arcade like steering?

im telling you go buy a shitty car for like 200-300 its easy and it stops wear and tear on your good car if you deliver pizza go to www.craigslist.com and find the closest listed city to you and look in cars/trucks

Re: arcade like steering?

well all problems should be solved for free actually. i did some research on my car, and found that the 97 cavalier has 2 recalls. the ignition switch, and the pinion. so i called gm about it and they ran my VIN and said that i qualify for it. so GM is going to fix it for free. now i just hope it all goes down that smooth at the dealership.

Re: arcade like steering?

That's a pretty nice short bus. Glad you got your problem solved. I was going to suggest the junkyard www.car-part.com for the rack. I would use a turkey baster and suck out the p/s reservoir once a year and add new fluid. FWIW I use Carquest p/s fluid and it works well.
