92 silverado mystery ?
I hope this is not a mystery to someone on here.....it is to me and many I know...
So...I have this truck runs really nice....92 silverado, 5.0 305 v8....one day it just decides it doesn't want to start after going into the store...ran great until I shut it off...nothing out of the norm.just won't start...cranks and cranks but just won't start ...seems it's not getting gas..figure out that it starts right up w/ a few shots of starting fluid...then runs perfect ! it's been a battle for like 2 months the truck will go 2 weeks starting fine , every time i try to start it...then one day it won't....all different times...hot days, cold, humid....never seems to be weather related. I've changed the plugs, cap , rotor, air filter..run lots of fuel system treatments...tried to change fuel filter, but one of the fittings is frozen (even after many tries w/ loosening sprays.) (not sure how to change line goes from steel to rubber to steel w/ wierd fittings seems like one long "factory item" kind of part) I was going to change the coil but bolts for the mount are directly under steel fuel line and I really don't feel like ripping the throttle body apart if I don't have to. battery is fine...thinking maybe a starter but it cranks like a champ... It just starts sometimes and sometimes it doesn't ..... The mystery continues...can anyone shoot some ideas my way....the truck is currently in "I don't wanna start today mode" coming off a 3 week consistent starting stint.gettin tired of unscrewin the air filter and spraying starting fluid in it to get it started. mike |

Maybe Fuel Pump--But probably fuel filter--Change that fuel filter now and then report back--

I don't think it's the pump or the filter because it runs (once you get it started)it doesn't jump, hesitate...sputter..nothing...runs really good..
so...to add to the list of unneeded repair...I just changed the coil...and also rebuilt the fuel pressure regulator (no replacement , they give you a rebuild kit....hooked it all up got it started (w/ starting fluid) took it for a ride...ran good, no change in performance..... yet when I shut it off...it wouldn't start on it's own again.. the saga continues...! any ideas |

Have someone look into the throttle body when you try to crank it just to be sure if it's getting fuel, or not. I've never heard of fuel pumps acting up quite like that, they usually just go out, but it never hurts to check, is there like a fuel pump relay or something that might be going bad? It just sounds like too much of a fuel problem to be not wanting to turn over, but then it just runs fine.

I would bet a fuel pressure guage would have helped with the diagnosis.

fuel pump
man i had the same problem with my fuel pump. turns out there's like a screen inside the tank that got clogged. i had to take it to a mechanic. he hated me because my 40 gallon gas tank was full, so he had to take off the bed and replace it that way. i would have done it, but i really couldnt get it up to driving it around to use the gas when it wouldnt stay running.
