transmission question about switching 91 transmission with an 88

I own a 91 s-10 with a 2.8 v6 2wd and I'm putting a 88 s-10 transmission in it...the question is that the speedometer hook ups are different....the 88 had a cable to it....and the 91 has a sensor looking plug in it.....are they interchangeble? and if so is it a lot of work? thank you very much.

I have the same problem for my 4.3l but backwards. I want to put a 91 trans in an 89. Lte me know if you figure it out.
