'94 Lumina - whining noise

Mine has a groaning/whining noise coming from the engine area, mainly heard when accelerating, changing pitch as the engine revs. Is this something that happens often with Lumina's? Any idea what it is? Transmission, belt, pulley? It has a new water pump.

Re: '94 Lumina - whining noise

Alternator will whistle, and sometimes rumble or groan if the bearings are bad. Power steering pump would be most likely, if I'm imagining the noise correctly. I guess you've checked the fluids? You can take the belt off, and start it for a short time to see if the sound is belt driven, and not a tranny pump or something like that. If the noise is gone with the belt off, you can spin all the pulleys and see which seems to have any drag or gravely feel to it. Sometimes A/C compressors can be the cause also. But just because it makes noise doesn't always mean it needs replaced, not right away, anyhow.

Re: '94 Lumina - whining noise

Good idea on trying with the belt off. It very well does sound like it could be an alternator pulley. I didn't think of that. I've heard alternator pulley noise before. If I find it, I'll report back.

Thanks for the tips.

One more thing first, I don't think the noise can be heard while it's sitting. How long could I drive it with the belt off?

Re: '94 Lumina - whining noise

I had a similar problem. Wasnt sure what it was until my car wouldnt start...Alternator...got a jump and my VOLTS light was on by the time I got home (3 miles) drove at dusk with the lights off. I think autozone can check your alternator for you. Mine whistled/whined for about 2 months before it finally gave out.

I don't advise driving it at all with the belt off . It will begin to overheat right away, but won't show on the gauge because the heat is near the valves in the head, and not near the sensor. If you had to, just to hear it when moving, not more than a block. And shut it off right away! No water moving in the motor to cool it with the belt missing.

Re: '94 Lumina - whining noise

Really you should never run without a water pump turning for more than a few seconds. It only takes about 2 minutes for surface boiling in the cooling jacket around the exhaust valves to begin.
