Camaro Running hot 94 Z28

Ever since i bought the car my coolant light would come on and off. I found out it wasnt holding pressure and replaced the cap. now it holds pressure but the low coolant light still comes on periodically. I was wondering if i needed a flush, bleed the system, or a new stat. But its running hotter than what its suppossed to be running at.. The gauge is almost always above the half way mark. I cant figure this out for the life of me. Please help. Thanks alot!

You answered your own question, I would flush and replace the stat.

Check your tranny fluid too if it's an auto and the motor seriously overheated.

I dont know why that would trigger the low coolant light though if it is full? also does chevy want you to use that orange colored coolant or just the regular green stuff?

Probably has an air pocket that's screwing with the sensors.

As for the freeze, I get the prestone all makes all models type. It's about the only one you can buy that isn't pre cut.

Re: Camaro Running hot 94 Z28

i think you are supposed to use the green stuff, the orange is dexcool and is used in newer cooling systems with different seals. you never want to mix green and orange coolant.

also, if im correct the half way mark is only like 180-200 degrees, thats actually cooler than designed. these engines are supposed to run at 220 degrees sitting in traffic with the A/C on. the newer corvette thermostats dont open until 226 degrees.

what temp is the car actually running at, no sense fixing something that isnt broken.

taht makes me laugh. My mechanic insist on using the dexcool....i still cant figure mine out. No leak is apprent but it seems to extremly low after a short amount of time, also...u lift the cap and its covered in cunk...we cant figure it out. me and afriend are gonna flush the block when we get a chance and se if it makes a difference. Oh, it doesnt run hot either...its weird

Re: Camaro Running hot 94 Z28

yup, time for a flush, the dex cool has been known in certain applications to "gel", which causes clogged cooling passages. Sometimes its bad enough that you need to replace the radiator. So i wouldnt wait on that, id go ahead and have a full cooling system flush with a cleaner and conditioner (no not the type to clean your hair) and then put new coolant in.

Re: Camaro Running hot 94 Z28

whoa whoa, i just noticed the camaro in your sig, what year is it, did you mix the green and orange coolant??? that would explain the gel formation you called cunk. thats why you dont mix em, get that crap outta there.

Re: Camaro Running hot 94 Z28

its a 94. but its not mixed. We flushed the radiator before i got it. they just didnt flush the block. It may have been mixed before...but not since ive had it.

Re: Camaro Running hot 94 Z28

yeah i would say make sure you get it done right this time, because the two coolants are not ment to be mixed and can be quite corroive when that happens.

Re: Camaro Running hot 94 Z28

i was really mad after they flushed it...that orange crap got everywhere along with chemicals they used to clean the radiator...it stained my rims and it hard to get off the car.

Re: Camaro Running hot 94 Z28

oh and there is a sensor in the overflow tank that determines coolant level, if that sensor goes bad it could trigger the low coolant light, ive seen that happen on a malibu.
