harsh shifting.

I have a 99 passat wagon w/1.8T tip trans. just did brakes all aorund. serviced finally after a year of neglect. changed struts and tie rod ends.
problem. now for some odd reason. when shifting between 1st and 2nd there is a pause( as if shift into nuetral ) then hard re-engagement all of a sudden. it softens as you upshift to higher gear. any thoughts on cause ??
