1998 Malibu Shifter

I have a 1998 Chevy Malibu 3.1L Automatic. Today the shift knob began to tear near the base because the plastic broke off inside the shifter. I took the knob assembly off and there is still a plastic piece on the post. Its the plastic piece that the bottom lock you have to spin to engage is connected to. Is it possible to take that plastic piece off or do I have to file it off? I bought a replacement aluminum knob but this plastic piece is in the way. Does this describe the problem clear enough?

I'm wanting to put the aluminum shift knob on instead of replacing the knob with stock. Stock is shit and aluminum is the only thing that will hold up to my shifting. Thats just the way it is.
