Question Looking for a 97 3.8L Bonneville SE transmission

Whats up people. Im new here and I figured i would give it a try. I'm looking for a transmission and trying not to pay too much money for a 97 pontiac bonneville se 3.8L transmission. If anyone has an idea on where i can search or who to talk to, I would appreciate it. I hate my car so much i wish i could push it in the river. Its been nothing but problems since i had it in 97. And the dealerships do nothing because they can. So if anyone has help I would appreciate it.

Try your nearest auto salvage yard. There should be a sheet metal tag on the transmission. You need that to get one for the gear ratio. You get a transmission with a wrong gear ratio, transmission will not work.

Wafrederick: about overall gear ratio, can you tell if the difference between similar transmissions is set at the differential gearing or at the chain drive level? (I would guess the chain stays at 1:1 isn't it). And how does it show on the tag? is it shown in clear somewhere or is it one of the code letters? (I have the GM service manual but they do not explain the codes)

And......having a slightly different gear ratio would change indicated speed and possibly slightly alter gear shift points, it seems, not a big deal if you know about it, no??

Try carpart.com or cherry-auto.com they have access to wrecking yards all over the country and with carpart.com you can search yards in your area for the best prices.

On those tags, there are three letters( such as wsw, etc). Those do tell the gear ratio is.Motor repair manuals,Domestic transmission one has charts in the what the gear ratio is from those letters
