Question What Japanese Car for road racing?

I would like to get into road racing but first I need a car. At first I will basically be leaving the car stock while I work on my driving skills. Eventually, when I become a good driver I plan on turning it into a full on track car.

I was originally thinking of getting a 3rd generation RX7 because I absolutely love the car. I am starting to think that this may not be the best option because it is known to have reliability problems and I will be driving it hard.

I was wondering what some of you would suggest for a Japanese car that would be well suited for circuit racing and can take the abuse.

Thanks

Third gen. RX-7 or Lancer Evolution.

well, if your gonna be beating the shit out of the car. your going to be running into problems no matter what. whether its suspension parts breaking, engine parts failing, door panels busting from your body moving from side to side, etc.

whats your budget to start out with? what country do you live in?

in my eyes, i dont think it really matters what car you start out with...all the japanese performance cars can be equally as good as the other. depends if you want brand new or older, 15k or 30k, AWD or RWD, etc.

shop around..what do you like? drive a few? find out if you like AWD in the corners or RWD. just do some testing of your own and some researching. im sure you will be happy with any of the japanese performance cars out there.

Re: What Japanese Car for road racing?

I would say for cheap road racing...maybe a RX7 wouldnt be the route to go...I dunno what...but unless you got the budget to back it...dont get it...I would say maybe a C5...cheaper now that we have the ZO6's and C6 out...cheap enough that you can find plenty of engine parts...dunno...it's up to your budget

Re: What Japanese Car for road racing?

How do you think a 350z would hold up on the track. I am guessing pretty well considering that you see a few out there. There are also a lot of them in JGTC which I think is a good sign.

The problem is that I want a good track car but I also want something that I like the looks of.

I love the 3rd gen RX7 and it is not even so much the cost of repairing it but more so the time. I do have other commitment in life so I can't be spending all my time working on my car.

Re: What Japanese Car for road racing?

Miata. Parts are cheap, the cars are reliable, and they're competitive in whatever class they run in. It's not as fast, but it's a MUCH better car to learn on.

Haha, it's all good, if you think it's a good car for road racing, then recommend it

kfoote, very true about the Miata. If he's on a tight budget, then the Miata is probably the best way to go, or maybe a 240SX.

yeah miatas are a very good track car and pretty simple car to learn on compared to some.

a 350z is a good track car but be careful because that back end will swing out on you.

sounds like you have a fairly tall budget beings your considering a 350z. as far as i know, the brand new miatas cost a little less than the 350z. anything you want dude. really it all depends on what you like the looks of and how you want your performance. the s2000 you really gonna have to rev it to get it to go but that isnt a bad thing, in my opinion. but on the other hand the 350z, is just gonna feel like you can out accelerate anything no matter what RPM you are at.

I've always heard that the 350Z has very neutral handling, with slight understeer if anything.
