anyone take their cat out?
i wanted to know, if anyone did this, that either gutting my cat out or running a straight pipe would do anything for sound or performance? besides killing my bottom end

You will fail inspection. I am ordering replacement from Random Technologies. $216.00 #822230 (uses NGK 02 sensor)#24075.

Don't do it!!
It's not worth it. Do some hunting in the se-r mailing list archives for other options. It's better to find a less-restrictive cat (and you can find an inexpensive one) than to be a gross poluter or end up with an exhaust-gas-velocity-killing-gutted-cat.

It will greatly increase the decibels of your exhaust tone. Not good!
Oh, didn't know if some one also mentioned that it will make your car a gross polluter yet. It's a Bad! bad! bad! bad! thing to do.

dude do u even know what a catylitic converter is for? not only is it illegal to get rid of it but u will release carbon monoxide (which is TOXIC to aerobic organisms) as well as other harmful gases..read this to find out a bit more

I have learned from that and also researched the cat a little. Don't remove your cat. It pollutes the air, increases the exhaust sounds and in some cases can make your car run worse depending on if you have an OBD-I or OBD-II emmisions set-up. Just a suggestion/opinion. Get yourself a cat and put it back on.

My understanding of a test pipe with a resenator was that it opened up the exhaust making it flow better as oppsed to it hitting a plugged up cat. I was thinking about getting a test pipe to open up my exhaust but then i guess id be a gross poluter. You know what though as long as i put it back on before i go to emissions i'll be fine, even though i am killing the enviroment i might just see a small highend increase. Not sure if i'm gonna do this or a high flow cat. But i'll probably do a high flow cat because then i don't have to mess with my exhaust every year.

Based on your mods, and your 1/4 mile time, I'd guess this is a street car and not an all-out dedicated racer. Putting a test pipe/resonator in there won't be much less restrictive than a stock cat, and not a whole lot cheaper than getting a new cat either.
Go buy a high flowing replacement cat (be creative, find one for a chevy 454cid V8 truck or something). With your mods, I don't think you'll ever notice a difference. Even us turbo guys run cats on our cars. |

Thats odd cuase i know my buddy with a GST opened up his exhaust and i helped him a lot but then a gain he has a big turbo and giant front mount and all kinds of other shit. His car runs low 13's and once he gets slicks probably 12's. I would have guessed that a open pipe would do something for high end, but i might just go with a high flow cat.

To come to wta defence, here in NZ there are NO laws that permit us to have a Cat. And it is the recomendation of most exhaust shops and performance shops that the Cat be removed for performaance gains as it restricts the flow of the gases. Maybe your cars have different cats etc. but when i removed mine i had an instant 3kw after 2500rpm all the way to 4000 and then some in the top end as well. The noise did go up but not drastically, i have 4-2-1 extracters, 2 1/4 with two resonaters etc. My intake is also done. Mine is not overly loud but still very noticably low and can get raspy. Maybe i'll try putting a Cat out of a V8 or something and see what happens

Opps, by the way the Cat that was originally in the car was a free flow unit designed to be less restrictive than the standard item.

I've never been to New Zealand, but it looks beautiful in pictures and movies (Lord of the Rings). I live in LA, and you don't want your skies to look like ours on a bad day.
Putting a catalytic converter back on may hold back a couple of horses, but you'll get that warm fuzzy feeling that comes from clean air. Anyone can make a car fast, but the real challenge is to make it fast, efficient, and environmentally sound. That's just my opinion, but I'm glad to see that a lot of the people on this forum seem to share it.
