Trans clunk

I have a 96 Cherokee. 4.0 L auto trans. When I start off at a light ,It seems to clunk in to first gear. I does not do this every time. Its like when I stop, sometimes its not downshifting back into first gear. All other shifting is fine. Any ideas?

Are you positive its the tranny?? Make sure your rear brakes are working, if they're not working properly you're going to hear a clunk when you take off after stopping.
