94 olds flooding under load

I just bought a 94 Olds Cutlass Supreme 4 door 3.1 v-6. It starts and runs good at city speeds. The intake gasket was changed before I bought it. It will sporatically miss and clouds of black smoke will billow from the tailpipe. This happens more frequently when in over-drive. I let off the gas momentarily to clear it then press the gas pedal again and it fixes itself for a minute then starts flooding again.
Could this be a coil pack or fuel pressure regulator?
There's so many things that it could be I don't know where to start.
Any advise would be appreciated. I'd like to fix one or two things not 20 if possible.

Brian I would start with the fuel pressure regulator.Do you have a check engine light on when this happens?

I have had the check engine light come on when flogging it after a high RPM run - Matted! but it went out shortly after.
