HELP!!! 97 GT Brakes Stuck!!!
Boy do I ever need some help today!! When I went to go out this afternoon I got about a mile from home when I realized that the car was acting funny, well it wasn't long before I realized that all of my brakes are stuck!! What a sight .... smoke pouring out of the wheels of my pretty GT!! Before anyone asks the silly question ... no the E brake isn't on, nor have I used it in awhile ... LOL!!
So here I am on a holiday weekend, no garages open!! I can really use some help here. If anyone has any suggestions on what to try, or what to look for I'd really really appreciate it!! Thanks to all, and have a safe holiday weekend!! ~Dee~ |

Yes the brake pedal is hard as a rock!! I drove the car again, and the brakes were ok, then on my way back they stuck again. Its very odd to me that ALL of the brakes stuck, I have a brake hang up before, but never all at once!
Thanks for any help you can offer me!! ~Dee~ |

Re: HELP!!! 97 GT Brakes Stuck!!!
my guess would be the master cylinder is shot, or your brake pedel is jammed down all the way. sorry to hear than man you'll prolly need new pads and rotors if they warped

Re: HELP!!! 97 GT Brakes Stuck!!!
A lot of times the caliper sliders is stuck.
You can try lubing (high temp grease) the slider bolts of the caliper. I would also recommend to completely bleed the old brake fluid. Use at least two large brake fluid. Bleed until a clear brake fluid comes out of each caliper. Brake fluid is suppose to be bleed every two years because the moisture creates acid and creates rusts in the brake system. If that does not work, you might have to try what they have suggested to replace the master cylinder. |

Re: HELP!!! 97 GT Brakes Stuck!!!
try to take the 2 bolts off like when your changing the pads and try using a c clamp to push the brake pistons back in, maybee that will free up snagging in the brake line if that doesnt work i wouldbleed the brakes like slade said.

Re: HELP!!! 97 GT Brakes Stuck!!!
Dude save your self a lot of grief. The calipers are stuck and will probably need to be replaced. I have the same problem with a '97 GTP and just ordered re-man calipers for it today. This seems to be a problem with brakes on the '97s. The emergency brake system doesn't use the calipers to activate so don't worry about it. When my GTP developed the problem I tried everything to solve the problem and the only thing left was to replace the calipers.

Re: HELP!!! 97 GT Brakes Stuck!!!
Thanks so much for your replys everyone!! You guys are great!! Heres where I'm at with the GT ... I stuck my foot under the brake pedal and pulled it up and *~POOF~* like magic they unstuck! I am wondering why this happened though?? Any ideas? I'm wondering if it was the pedal or a wire or what .... I do believe that this calls for some investigating!! Again, thanks so much for the replys and let me know if you have any ideas about this brake pedal.

"brake pedel is jammed down all the way" The only reason i said this is because it happened to me once when i had first got the car and was tryin out the brakes. somebody should see whats going on and why it does this sometimes though

gtgp97 .... Did you ever find out why yours did that? It hasn't done it since the first time, but I find myself using my foot to pull up on the brake pedal while driving "just to make sure" ... LOL! Other than that the car has been great, just the usual blower motor resistor & drivers window switch. From what I see here on the forum that seems to be normal for the GP's. Is there anything else I should watch for or check?? Thanks for your help, it was very useful and very much appreciated!!

Re: HELP!!! 97 GT Brakes Stuck!!!
nope i never figured out what was wrong since it is fine now...but maybe later this week ill get my dad to go out there with me while i push the brake down fully to check it out. Only other thing ive heard that are problematic on gp's are wheel bearings and a few people i know gettin really bad gas mileage. good luck with your brakes

Re: HELP!!! 97 GT Brakes Stuck!!!
Guys, sometimes when the pedal get stuck all the way in is caused by the Master Cylinder. If the piston inside the master cylinder goes all the way in and gets passed the cylinder and it is not new then the worn seal could prevent the piston to come back easly into the cylinder.

Thanks for the info ... I think when my car goes in this week for the wheel bearings I will have them take a look at the Master Cylinder also. Thank god when mine stuck I was close to home, cause I probably would have worn out a brand new set of brakes!!
Thanks to everyone for the help!! ~Dee~ |
