Living in Australia I've found MediaMix and Rainbow 10 are the best for me. I find that although you can pickup some great deals on eBay the cost of shipping usually wipes out any savings.

Mine is Modelexpress its the only place I have ordered from online, He has a canadian site, in canadian dollers, so its good for me, no moeny exchange rates, and the shipping doesnt make much of a dent. And his service is extremely top notch, The last order I placed somehow went through in american dollers, and he phoned me at home the day after to inform me my order got messed up, he emails me when my orders are shipped, his customer service is simply great, and I recommend ordering from Dennis at Modelexpress to anyone and everyone.

Well, my experience is as follows...

I'm in Canada
Modelexpress.net was great. Cost to ship, and all sales taxes shown on site, and accurate. Quick shipping.
Ebay.com - bought one kit from the US. Cost to ship was low, and there were no customs charges.
HLJ - two orders. One about 2400 yen, the other 3500. Both had an additional $6-$8 for customs assessed.
HobbySearch - two orders, about the same size as the HLJ orders. Save 5% off Japan MSRP right off the bat, and both orders came with no additional customs fees.

If I need to order from Japan, it'll definitely be through 1999.co.jp from now on... at least until the free customs holds up...

Re: What is your favorite place to order from?

Scaleracecars.com is good too. Ebay is great. HLJ? Well, by the time I got my total from them, I'd found the parts I wanted locally and from scaleracecars.

Hobby Heaven is a good place to dela with too.

For me, the LHS route is a double edged sword - limited selection, but great "scratch and dent" deals at one....3 bucks if the box is open (or 4 for $10), 5 if it's sealed. Never know what I'll find there.

HLJ in general and Ebay for the more 'exotic' and harder to find kits.

Well, HLJ is probably the one most of us use here, and for me they have the best Website of all. Ordered stuff now from Hobby world just to try it out, like the fact that they have Tamiya acrylics and loads of kits actually "in stock", plus 3-4 pictures for each kit. The downsides are the fact that you have to leave credit details upon every order, plus their shipping prices are sky high.

Later, Mike.
