RPM Needle
Hi,
I have a 2000 Saturn SL1. I have about 65K miles on it. I give it the usual oil change when it needs it. However, sometimes my RPM needle jumps up to 2000 RPMs when I place the car on PARK or when I am at a drive through sometimes it lunges forward even whne I have my foot on the brake. This also happens when I have the heat or the A/C turned on. Do you think I need a new air filter? Thank you for your help in advance! Terry |

highly doubt the air filter is you're problem. maybe something with the computer. Auto or manual trans?

well, heres what i was thinking. but keep in mind this is with manual trans, and i know jack about automatics. there is one idle set by a screw on the intake, and another set by the computer(and two idling modes, one when your stopped one when your moving, here i'm talking about when your moving). the computer adjust the idle by your driving habits.i know this for a fact because when my girlfriend drives my 1994(manual) she rides the clutch petal(rests her foot on the petal, clutch slips) the computer adjust the idle from my driving(1250 rpms) to hers (2000 rpms, it would be more but the computer limits the idle at 2000). then when i drive it again, some times the idle would go back down, other times i had to reset the computer. reseting the computer is easy, some people take the negitive cable off the battery, but its better to go under the hood and take out the PCM I and PCM B fuses and put them back in (both at the same time, one at a time may not work). if you do this your car may start and then die, but but the second time you'll be fine. like i said this is what i do with my car, i can't promise anything with your car.
ok, i'll stop blabing now, injectior cleanier wouldn't hurt |

Thanks Sierra, I don't think that I will be able to go under neath my car because my drive way is on a hill and I don't have the necessary equipment those 2 things you place in front of your 2 front wheels to make your car go up (excuse my lack of a better term). I'll look into reseting the computer like you said in the battery. Now, I have a new problem, my service engine soon light comes on and off sporadically. The warning light stays on for about an hour then the light shuts off. This doesn't happen everyday. Thanks! Terry |

if you're getting a code get it read...its really the easiest way to narrow things down. someone on here said autozone reads them for free. guessing games suck. sounds like a sensor or maybe egr or something. its probably the throttle position sensor or idle air control valve.
and putting in injector cleaner can hurt, usually ends up clogging them up more than cleaning them out..there are a couple brands out there that are good, but you shouldnt have any injector clogs if you use a decent gas co. ..the detergents they put in cheaper gas suck for injectors. |

I don't know what it is. When I went to autozone the guy told me it was due to slipping because it usually happens when I put the car in PARK. But it also happens if I have the A/C or the heater turned on, so I agree with you it could be the air control valve. Maybe I just need a new radiator cause I got this car brand new in 2000 and the only thing that I have done to it is get oil changes and I have about 66K miles on it. I'm waiting for it to die. Maybe it will judging from the GM quality. Thanks again! Buckle Up and Don't Drink and Drive! Terry |

sorry, but 66k is nothing on a saturn, plenty of people have 200K without an engine rebuild. and you don't have to jack the car up to get to the fuses (not that it will help you now that you have the codes)its just in front of the battery.
