Yea well i have a bit of a problem here. My moms long time freind has a 2000 celica gt not gts, and its an automatic, and she is selling it. I have my learners and will be getting my liscence soon and my parents said that that they would buy me the car, the problem is is that i want to race my car, i need a manual, shes selling the car for about 10,000 and i need to know if i should purchase the celica and pay for the transmission swap or continue saving up and buy my own car.
(i CANNOT sell the car once i buy it so i cant just sell it and buy a manual) Thanks

Ok..... here is the answer to all your problems. Let your parents buy the car... you still with me? Good. Then while you have that car drive it and stuff and get a job and save and buy your 240.. that way you have 2 cars that are nice and you only paid for 1. That isn't that hard to figure out, is it?

240sx's are expensive to insure. the celica will have a waranty, it will be easy and reliable. a tranny swap is not that hard at all. all you need are the parts and the know how to install it, if not about $1000 for labor to install it. the GT can be better than the GTS. it has a lower CR and better powerband. its a much better car to turbo and can make more power and be more reliable. |

1.) the 240sx isn't under sport car insurance (i'm almost positive on this cuz it isn't in my insurance agent) so it would be cheaper to insure than the GT which is 2.) a tranny swap is NOT that easy on newer model cars... i'm not sure about the celica but we swapped my friend's 2.5 RS from auto to manual and it was all sorts fucked up... everything inside the car is related to the planetary gears so taking those away fucks up the programmed timing in the ECU (i dunno if the celica has an ECU stock or not i'm not big on toyota.. i'm looking into them though) but anyways it gets all sorts fucked up... get it done professionally *we did get the manual tranny to work though in the end 3.) about the GT being able to be better than the GTS i completely agree.. i'm glad you put that out there for him so he doesn't think that lil S determines everything 4.) unfortuneately once you put aftermarket parts on your car... you lose your warrenty... that shit sucks i learned it the hard way... but that's ok.. do whatever you want to. this is your car and your future.. mold it the way you see fit |

yeah, the insurance on any car depends on several factors.
but being RWD, if he is insured as the primary driver on the car, or if the car is under his name, it will be more expensive then an auto, lower trim 7th gen celica. as for the tranny swap, the parts i said you needed included an ECU. i know that ECU's for the same car with different tranny's are different. on older cars it was a matter of switching a few wires, but newer ECU's are way different. also AWD makes a huge difference in a tranny swap. lots more than just the tranny in a FWD car which includes the differential. but you are right, it is not easy, but its also not extremely hard. and waranties do suck. i have a waranty on my 97 celica ST and if the dealer knew i was boosting, they would cut me off so fast that my neck would snap. the only good thing about waranties is that they cover the big stuff. a lot of the little stuff is not included, like everything from the exhaust manifold back, and EGR systems. |

you need 2 cars if your going to race one because if it fucks up and your daily is the race car your sol (and it will happen if you mod the car it takes time to mod you need something to drive in the mean time) so get both dont pay insurance on the 240 or the race car until you get ready to race it thats your best bet. of cource thats my opinion i have 6 cars
