Xanavi NISMO Z. First kit in years.

I'm trying to get back at this hobby after more than 5 years of inactivity. Since it's not like riding a bike and skills do go away if not practiced, I chooses the easiest kit I had in my stack to get my hand on.

First few steps are done on the chassis. The die cast chassis have the advantage of having no pinhole and being prepaint, making it easier to prepare, but also come with few rough edge that you can’t really smooth. The disk brakes are done with the supplied P-E Part and will actually look good once the wheels are on. Scale Motorsport carbon decals are added to the part where the chassis will be visible once the body is on. A good way to get back at MicroSol/Set techniques.

Then I move on the interior. First step is the dashboard. A good practice at carbon fiber. I still have to recover a few skill, but the overall finish is quite satisfying.

I gave the seat a good fabric treatment with a mix of floacking and paint. After 3 coat, the effect is close to reference picture I have.

Next stell will be the PE seatbelt and some more interior. You can see my buildup on my web site Tamiya 24277 1/24 Xanavi NISMO Z Build-up | Vric Scale Models

looks like you're on the right track with getting back on this hobby.

did notice some spots though where the CF wasn't flush on the surface, such as on the front tray and on the dash (beside the autobacs number card).

Thanks for the feedback.

I did had trouble with my Microsol. Guess it's too old (6 years old or so)

I reworked the dashboard and updated the picture. As for the chassis, it won't be shown anyway, but I did rework it a bit too.

Re: Xanavi NISMO Z. First kit in years.

Very small update as I have finished the interior. This kit is kinda boring since it's so much simplified. Still a good "training kit", but when you are used to more detailed/harder/scratch-building kit...

Anyway, beside a few Carbon decals and P/E parts, it's mostly OOB.

Vric - it doesn't look like you lost your skills - maybe it is like riding a bicycle - looks very good so far - I will follow this one - John

Re: Xanavi NISMO Z. First kit in years.

Thanks for the comments. Good to be back here!

Few more progress. Body preparation and painting.

I'm not 100% happy with the paint job, mainly because of the polishing I did after. Few not so careful move and I removed paint on 2-3 small spot. Fortunately, touch-up won't show much after decals and clear. I'm not that happy with the panel line too. Guess for future build, I will mix my own color in a darker shade instead of using good ol Gundam black marker.

Re: Xanavi NISMO Z. First kit in years.

Hours flew by and the decal job is done. New Micro/sol bottle made wonder here (my old one wasn't good anymore). It wasn't an easy task, but much easier than the first carbon job I did with my old one.

Next step will be clear coating. 5 years ago, my last model was a full carbon 911. After hours(put some more SSS to hours) of decals, the clear coat made a reaction and ruined the model. Let's hope it won't happen again. I will use Zero Clear 1k for the first time. I wish me luck!

Vric - the paint and decals work has come out nicely - one thing I do to help prevent the decals reacting with clears whether they are 1K or 2K - I mist the first 2 coats really light so that the solvents cannot aggressively attack the decals - the has worked for me so far and I have "knock on wood" yet to have decals react - John

Re: Xanavi NISMO Z. First kit in years.

Clear coat went well. The ZeroPaint clear is quite good. Smells a lot, but it's easy to work with and forgiving. Polishing with some micro-mesh, Tamiya fine compound then the finish compound. Some cleaning must be done, but overall not a bad paint job for a comeback-n00b.
